Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner MARS Announced for PC and PlayStation 4

Konami has announced Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner MARS for PlayStation 4, PlayStation VR, and PC.

The game is a remastered version of Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner, featuring enhanced graphics with support for up to 4K resolution, as well as new sound design complete with next-gen surround sound. Konami also teased “brand new features,” with full VR support.

Featured above, you can view the game’s debut trailer. Cygames is helping with developing the remaster for modern platforms.

Here’s a rundown on the game:

Cygames and Konami Digital Entertainment have announced Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner MARS, a jointly developed, remastered version of the hit title from 2003, Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner. The latest title in Konami’s breakneck robot battle series will avail of the latest 4K and VR technology to bring high speed robot action smashing its way onto modern consoles – and to the Tokyo Game Show, where visitors will be able to get their first glimpse of the game in action.

Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner was the sequel to the PlayStation 2 title, Zone of the Enders and continued the high-octane, big robot, super-fast action that characterized the first title in the series. In 2012 the two titles were re-released as Zone of the Enders HD Collection, for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, which featured high definition visuals and updated UI.

The current release is based on this high-definition version of Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner, but with a host of virtual reality content to truly immerse players into the experience of piloting a big robot. Using The 2nd Runner‘s unique graphics technology, ZOE Shader, all of the visuals have been completely overhauled for 4K technology and given cutting edge post effects, and all of the audio has been remastered, providing truly luscious stereophonic sound.

Gamers will be able to experience the thrill of piloting a high speed giant robot for themselves at Tokyo Game Show 2017. The game will be playable at the Konami Digital Entertainment booth at the event, which takes place from September 21 to 24 at the Makuhari Messe convention center.

. A release date is set for sometime next spring, worldwide.

I don’t know if I should be excited or not. I mean it’s Z.O.E, but it’s also not a new game in the franchise. It’s just another update to the game and with no idea what these other “brand new features’ are, I feel like it’s still to early to really get completely excited about this. Unless this is just them testing the waters to gauge interest in the franchise for a new entry, however unlikely I feel like that might be coming from Konami as they are now, I’m not sure what VR will do for this game.

This is the only console game the developers have worked on so far.
So yeah, I can see this going /very/ well indeed. I mean it’s basically the same thing as Z:O:E.

Mech games work quite well in VR, but then again this is Konami.

The new features are better graphics, 4K resolution, remastered audio, and a new VR mode. Also a new entry without Kojima doesn’t get me excited.

I was expecting some shiny new graphics considering we already got a remaster of ZOE 2 (and 1) but this looks the same, but now in 4K. Lame, even for Konami.

They might be starting to back away from it since gambling legalization could kill the market. Funny, since they tried to ditch gaming and put all their eggs in the pachinko basket and now they’re crawling back without most of their talent.

So the entire game can be played in VR? If so, then I wonder how exactly they’re going to handle when Ken climbs into your cockpit and sits on your lap for like a quarter of the game. Because that could be…interesting…especially if they keep the burnt-off-clothing Easter egg in there…

    No, he also designed them.

Doesn’t matter though, NOBODY working in the industry gets royalties for their work. Not even the actors, which is why it was one of the conditions for their strike.

Are we just forgetting the gigantic mess that the PS3 ports of ZOE and ZOE2 were when Kojima was still there? Did they ever get out that patch he promised that was gonna fix all the jank cause they rushed it in the first place?

Konami makes a number of slot machines in the US already, so it’s not like they’re necessarily fucked by gambling legalization in Japan in that regard, but ditching everything for pachinko, only for the Japanese to legalize gambling, has got to be a big slap in the face for Konami
