We’ve learned United States Army sim FPS America’s Army: Proving Grounds is shutting down in May 2022, as its servers will go offline.
Proving Grounds has run since its open beta launch in 2013, with a full launch a bit later in October 2015. The news for the game being closed up was announced over on its official forums.
While America’s Army: Proving Grounds is shutting down, the servers will actually go offline on May 5th on both Windows PC (via Steam) and PlayStation 4.
A free-to-play game, Proving Grounds was the first game in the series to use widescale application of video games for both strategic communication and of course – it was the first to be used in the recruitment of new enlistees.
It’s worth noting that America’s Army: Proving Grounds is the fourth game in the series, and the America’s Army team confirmed back in 2018 they were working on the next game in the series – tentatively named America’s Army 5 or America’s Army V.
News of the game’s closure naturally comes with a tease that the devs “look forward to what the future could hold for America’s Army,” and that they encourage fans to “stay tuned for future announcements on the series.”
To date, the America’s Army series has reached over 20 million players, and has seen over 30 million objectives completed, 180 million successful missions, 250 million teammates assisted, among many other in-game achievements in America’s Army: Proving Grounds alone.
For now, the America’s Army team will focus to “other new and innovative ways to assist the Army with comms and recruitment,” as they feel America’s Army has “fulfilled its mission.”
