Amazon Games announces new Lord of the Rings MMO

Lord of the Rings MMO

Amazon Games has announced a new agreement with Embracer Group subsidiary Middle-earth Enterprises to make a new Lord of the Rings MMO game.

The new massively-multiplayer-online game is being developed by New World developer Amazon Games Orange County, and will be released worldwide for Windows PC and unspecified consoles.

This is actually Amazon’s second attempt at a Lord of the Rings MMO, following their falling out with Chinese giant Tencent, under developer Leyou Technologies. That game sadly ended up being cancelled due to Amazon and Tencent being unable to negotiate the license and terms.

Now that Embracer Group owns Middle-earth Enterprises, they’re naturally looking to cash in on the lucrative Tolkien properties as much as possible with new “motion pictures, video games, board games, merchandising, theme parks and stage productions.”

It’s worth noting, however, this new MMO will be based on the main Lord of the Rings canon, i.e. the War of the Ring trilogy and not the appendices that Amazon has produced into a TV series.

Coming from this, this could be bad times for the long-running MMO Lord of the Rings Online, published by Daybreak Game Company, which has been in operation for over a decade and remains popular with fans.
