Amazon Developing Live Action Adaptation of The Promised Neverland

A new live-action adaptation of The Promised Neverland is reportedly coming to Amazon Prime’s streaming service in the future.

Deadline reports the new adaptation will be directed by Rodney Rothman; who is known recently for directing Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse. Writer Meghan Malloy who also worked on Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse will be writing the plot for the adaptation.

Joining Rothman in executive producing are Masi Oka, with Roy Lee and Miri Yoon from Vertigo Entertainment who worked on It and the 2015 Poltergeist remake. Fox 21 Television Studios, which is owned by The Walt Disney Company, will be producing the series alongside Amazon Studios.

The Promised Neverland was a manga series created by writer and artist duo Kaiu Shirai and Posuka Demizu. The series began in 2016 and ended in June of this year after being published by Shueisha in Weekly Shonen Jump.

The series follows three youths from the esteemed Grace Field House orphanage, Emma, Norman, and Ray. The children live their life in peace there until they’re inevitably “adopted.”

However the three learn the truth that the orphanage is more like a farm, and Grace Field House is known for raising highly intelligent children to feed to demons. The demons gain power and intelligence based on the quality of the meat they devour.

Together, the three have to use their wits, find a way to liberate the children from the Grace Field House, and figure out how to survive in the demon-infested world around them that considers them to be nothing more than premium livestock for wealthy demons.

An anime adaptation aired last year, with a second season set to premiere in 2021. Toho Films is also working on a live-action movie set to release later this year.

The Amazon TV series has yet to be given a premiere date.
