Akira 4K remaster gets theatrical re-release same day as original premiere for 35th anniversary

TOHO has announced they’ll be offering a very special screening of the Akira 4K remaster, the same day the legendary film premiered 35 years ago.

Fans of the classic film that haven’t seen the 4K remaster yet will be able to see it in the TOHO Cinema Hibiya (Tokyo), on July 16th at 4PM Japan time. This is the same day the film premiered 35th years ago, back in 1988.

Directed by the original author and creator Katsuhiro Otomo, the film was made over three years with the production budget of roughly $1 billion yen.

Tickets will go on sale Friday at midnight, July 14th, through the TOHO Cinemas website. Cinema Mileage members can get tickets earlier on July 13th at 9PM.
