AEROBAT is a Ludicrous Shmup Rife with Fighter Jets, Robots, Rainbow Lasers, & Explosions

AEROBAT is a completely insane, over the top arcade shmup-like game that has just blasted onto Steam Greenlight.

The game is developed by a single man, Matthew Yeager, which he describes as “gaming’s Citizen Kane if Citizen Kane was about fighter jets and robots and rainbow lasers and explosions.” Featured above, you can view the debut trailer for the game.

If you’ve followed my writing for any length of time, you’ll know that I’m a huge fan of shmups, especially ones that make an attempt to shake things up a bit – AEROBAT is definitely a strong contender to do that. The game has been in development for roughly two years, with its art, code, and design entirely being created by Yeager himself.

What sets AEROBAT apart from its competitors and predecessors is its clear distinction between shooting, and movement. You can fly at completely ludicrous speeds, but you’re unable to fire your weapons at the same time – hence creating a risk/reward scenario for players. You can somewhat embrace this by blasting lasers out, as you free-fall.

Movement is described as “hyper-responsive,” and being at the core of design, since the game’s inception. You’ll be able to move entirely with your mouse, although Yeager promises that players can enjoy “near zero input latency.”

To be honest, the entire mechanic sort of looks like a work of art in motion – with Yeager anticipating players’ greatest victories being achieved through reckless self-endangerment. To be honest, this is exactly how I like to play my shmups, always right to the very edge of possibilities.

If AEROBAT seems like the kind of game you’d want on Steam, head on over to its Steam Greenlight page. For now, you can follow the development of the game over on its official website.
