Adult Swim and Crunchyroll Announce New Original Series Fena: Pirate Princess

Fena: Pirate Princess

Adult Swim and Crunchyroll announced a new original anime series Fena: Pirate Princess during Adult Swim’s online Adult Swim Con.

The announcement was originally broadcast during the Toonami Edition panel of Adult Swim’s online convention. The convention highlighted new and upcoming projects like the upcoming Fena: Pirate Princess, while also celebrating past successes like the sudden return of Samurai Jack on Adult Swim.

The series follows orphan Fena Houtman, who was raised on an island in 18th century Europe “to be used and discarded by soldiers of the British Empire.” She escapes and seemingly forms her own pirate crew of Japanese samurai and ninjas, seeking the truth behind “Eden.” The show may also have fantasy elements.

For those who do not know, Adult Swim is Cartoon Network’s mature programming block that began in 2001. The Toonami programming block began on Cartoon Network proper, but was later moved to Adult Swim to keep up with its audience that was entering adulthood.

Since Toonami’s inclusion on Adult Swim, the network has tried its hand at co-producing multiple anime series; including FLCL Alternative, FLCL Progressive, and the upcoming anime adaptation of Junji Ito’s Uzumaki.

Fena: Pirate Princess will be Adult Swim’s first produced anime series not tied into any prior works as a sequel such as FLCL Alternative, or an anime adaptation of a manga such as Uzumaki.

You can watch the official trailer for Fena: Pirate Princess below.

You can find the rundown (via Crunchyroll) below.

“The series tells the tale of a young orphan girl, Fena Houtman. Fena has been raised on an Island where there is no hope of becoming anything more than chattel, to be used and discarded by soldiers of the British Empire. But Fena is more than just another powerless orphan. When her mysterious past comes knocking, Fena will break the chains of her oppressors. Her goal: forge a new identity, free of bondage, and search for a place where she can truly belong and find out the true mysteries behind a keyword “Eden.” It is the story of a lifetime adventure she and her crew of misfits and unlikely allies will have, in pursuit of her goals!”

Fena: Pirate Princess premieres 2021 on Crunchyroll and Toonami.
