Activision Blizzard has confirmed (via Gamasutra) they’ve laid off hundreds of staff.
The company is laying off eight percent of their staff worldwide across various subsidiaries including Activision, Blizzard, and King.
Nearly 800 employees are being laid off in an effort to shift focus from non-game-development related departments, while freeing up budget to hire development staff for their game franchises like Call of Duty and Diablo.
Blizzard president J. Allen Brack sent a note to employees saying that “staffing levels on some teams are out of proportion with our current release slate” and that the company needs to “scale down some areas of our organization.”
Brack added, “I’m sorry to share that we will be parting ways with some of our colleagues in the U.S. today.”
Lastly a “comprehensive severance package” and assistance with finding new jobs to recently laid off staff. Square Enix posted a note saying they’re looking to hire affected staff to their staff.
