A Prototype of the Original Sony-Produced SNES Disc Add-on is Discovered

Many longtime fans of the video game hobby are probably aware of the story regarding the circumstances for Sony entering the home-console market – following the deal they brokered with Nintendo of Japan going sour, at the time.

The deal was that Sony would produce a CD drive add-on for the Super Nintendo. However, Nintendo backed off, and instead forged a deal with Phillips that produced the nightmare-inducing CD-i Zelda games, and corresponding hardware.

It was announced at the Consumer Electronics Show in 1991 by Sony, but the very next day Nintendo announced it would be partnering with Phillips to create their disc based system.

Now, a user on Reddit has posted images and a video (featured above) of an original prototype from the supposed SNES cd drive add-on. According to the user, the unit came into his possession from a friend of his father, who previously worked for Nintendo.

My dad worked for a company, apparently one of the guys he used to work with, I think his name was Olaf, used to work at Nintendo and when my dad’s company went bankrupt, my dad found it in a box of ‘junk’ he was supposed to throw out.

As of now this is currently the only prototype known to exist.
