We’ve learned (via Hachima Kikou) that a new River City game is currently in development for the Nintendo 3DS.

The news comes via this week’s Famitsu, and we know the game is coming out in Japan on May 28th. Dubbed simply Downtown Nekketsu Jidaigeki, the game is set several years after the events of the NES game Downtown Special: Kunio-kun no Jidaigeki da yo Zenin Shugo. You can play with up to four party members, including the following: Kunimasa (also known as Kunio / Alex in River City Ransom), Tsurumatsu (also known as Kaoru Sonokawa / Harry in River City Ransom), and even two henchman of your choosing.

You can now utilize a sword thanks in part to the game’s new “Katana Action” mechanic. The blade is very strong, but it uses up your energy every time you use it. If you use up all of your energy and go on to use up your stamina, you won’t be able to recover—so there’s an element of punishment here should you abuse it.

Finally, there’s a Mission Mode, Story Mode, and a Battle Royale Mode, with the latter enabling up to four players to play against each other.

The Kunio-kun series is now owned by Million Corp., a company founded by former Technos Japan employees who then bought all of their former employer’s properties, including Kunio-kun and Double Dragon.
