During Minecraft Live 2026, Mojang officially revealed A Minecraft Movie Squared, the previously teased sequel to last year’s hugely successful live-action adaptation.
This announcement came with a behind-the-scenes teaser filmed in New Zealand, where production is already underway. Director Jared Hess is returning alongside writer Chris Galletta, continuing the story of Steve and Alex as they venture deeper into the Overworld and discover new locations, dangers, and adventures.
Fans can also expect plenty of familiar faces. Jack Black returns as Steve, joined once again by Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Matt Berry, and Jennifer Coolidge. One of the biggest additions is Kirsten Dunst, who will portray Alex, one of Minecraft’s most iconic characters.
The sequel was hardly a surprise after the first movie became a massive box office hit, earning nearly $960 million worldwide. Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures clearly aren’t wasting time capitalizing on that success, with the film already scheduled to arrive in theaters on July 23, 2027.
