Warner Bros. and Legendary’s A Minecraft Movie has smashed box office records with a staggering $301 million opening weekend.
The part live-action and part CG film raked in $157 million in the American box office and a staggering $144 million from the international markets.
The new milestone has cemented A Minecraft Movie as the most successful opening for a video game-to-film adaptation in the American box office, supplanting the Super Mario Bros. Movie – the latter of which remains the most-successful game movie adaptation in lifetime ticket sales.
A Minecraft Movie reportedly had a budget of $150 million so it has already recouped more than double its costs, making the movie an instant hit.
Box office analysts are tracking the Minecraft-inspired film to be earning more than both Sonic 2 and 3 films, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and even Nintendo’s Detective Pikachu film, though it hasn’t fully caught up to the Super Mario Bros. Movie.
A Minecraft Movie just premiered worldwide exclusively in theaters on April 4th, 2025.
