A Full-Length Witcher Movie is Coming via The Mummy Trilogy Producers

the witcher 3 11-05-15-1

A new, full-length movie adaptation based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s original set of The Witcher novels has been announced.

While details are currently scant, we know the movie is the first in a series of films, and will be releasing sometime in 2017. The production company behind the adaptation is headed by the producers behind The Mummy trilogy of films.

This is actually the second movie adaptation for The Witcher, with 2001’s The Hexer being the first. While that movie was only released in Polish, this new The Sean Daniel Company-headed production is coming to North America.

The new movie is also being created in part by Polish movie firm Platige Films, and is being directed by Oscar-nominated director Tomasz Baginski. Thania St. John is writing the script (Buffy the Vampire SlayerGrimm).

No actors have been confirmed for the movie at the time of publication.

Since it is based on the novels it can avoid the typical video game movie stigma.

For anyone wondering, the original Polish ‘Hexer’ film was a really bad adaption of the source material. It was actually a 2 hour, cutdown version of the then unreleased 13 episode TV show, and it just doesn’t work very well.

A year later it was rereleased in its 13 episode TV format, which while significantly better than the film, is still not very good.
While I don’t have high hopes for this new film series, I think it still has the potential to be a lot better than ‘the Hexer’. :)
