Horizon Forbidden West Will Not Feature Free PS5 Next-Gen Upgrade; Only via $80, $200, or $260 Special Editions

Horizon Forbidden West

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) have confirmed Horizon Forbidden West will not feature free upgrades to next-generation PlayStation 5 versions.

While most other games have enjoyed free next-gen digital “upgrades” for current generation ownership (Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S, or PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5), Horizon Forbidden West will not be one of them.

As stated on the game’s FAQ page, only those who buy three particular special editions of the game will be entitled to next-gen upgrades. Even then, the FAQ notes this grants access to both, so we can only assume saves can be transferred between them.

Can I upgrade my Horizon Forbidden West PS4 version to the PS5 version?

To access both the PS4 and PS5 versions of Horizon Forbidden West, you need to purchase the Digital Deluxe, Collector’s, or Regalla Editions. Dual entitlement does not apply to the Standard and Special Editions.

The Digital Deluxe Edition will be available for $79.99 USD; also including in game items, unlocks a special photo mode pose and face paint, and features a digital soundtrack, art book, and comic. The Collector’s Edition sells for $199.99 USD, with all of the above, a Steelbook display case, statues of Aloy and Tremortusk, and mini artbook.

Finally the Regalla Edition sells for $259.99 USD, includes all of the above, and includes a Replica Focus with stand, two art cards, and two more in-game items (Machine Strike pieces for Clawstrider and Sunwing).

The news is sure to be another blow to fans. They had previously endured the game’s delayed release date being announced after SIE were confident the game would hit its Holiday 2021 release.

Horizon Forbidden West launches February 18th on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
