Battlefield 2042 will include crossplay multiplayer and cross progression, publisher Electronic Arts and developer DICE have confirmed today.
While EA and DICE have confirmed Battlefield 2042 will include crossplay multiplayer, the companies are “looking to build and test” the functionality – so it’s not guaranteed to come in the game but they are testing PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5 crossplay during the invite-only technical alpha this summer. It’s already summer, so they’re likely just hinting it needs testing and refining.
Furthermore, EA notes that both PC and console players will reportedly be able to opt out of playing with other platforms. The AI bots that will help fill up servers will not be an opt-out thing, though, as the goal is to keep matches well populated and progressing. That won’t be a problem if you have crossplay fully enabled, though.
The previous-gen console versions of Battlefield 2042 on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 will have their own crossplay walled off, because both are limited to 64 players on servers. The PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 versions will support the full 128 player servers.
Also of note in the blog update is that EA still avoids definitively saying crossplay is coming with messages like ” we’d like to give you an understanding of what we’re looking to achieve,” but they do conclude by saying to “expect” crossplay, cross progression, and even cross commerce support for the game across PC, Xbox, and PlayStation.
