Sony Expects PS5 Shortages to Continue Into 2022

Sony expects PS5 shortages to continue into 2022, news confirmed by Sony chief financial officer Hiroki Totoki.

Totoki spoke (via Bloomberg) to analysts during a private briefing that came after Sony’s latest financial results, noting it has been a challenge for their company to match the demand for new consoles due to shortages with various parts like semiconductors.

“I don’t think demand is calming down this year and even if we secure a lot more devices and produce many more units of the PlayStation 5 next year, our supply wouldn’t be able to catch up with demand,” Totoki said.

He added, “We have sold more than 100 million units of the PlayStation 4 and considering our market share and reputation, I can’t imagine demand dropping easily.”

While Sony expects PS5 shortages to continue into 2022, Sony confirmed PlayStation 5 shipments topped 7.8 million units between its November 2020 release and the fiscal period ending in March 2021, and they’re targeting another 14.8 million units by March of 2022.
