Epic Games have announced they have acquired Tonic Games Group; including Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout developer Mediatonic.
Epic Games’ statement explains that the gameplay of Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout will not be changing, and the game will still be available on all current and previously announced platforms. Tonic Games Group Co-Founder and CEO had high praise for the shared vision they and Epic Games shared.
“At Tonic Games Group we often say that ‘everyone deserves a game that feels like it was made for them.’ With Epic, we feel like we have found a home that was made for us. They share our mission to build and support games that have a positive impact, empower others and stand the test of time and we couldn’t be more excited to be joining forces with their team.”
“It’s no secret that Epic is invested in building the metaverse and Tonic Games shares this goal,” states Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney. “As Epic works to build this virtual future, we need great creative talent who know how to build powerful games, content and experiences.”
Meanwhile, Mediatonic’s own statement once again emphasizes the game will remain on Steam and other platforms. They note their development team has grown from 35 people at launch in August 2020, to over 150. “Joining forces with Epic will accelerate our plans to improve the game and bring Fall Guys to as many players as possible,” Mediatonic explain, “while continuing to support the community.”
Mediatonic also state the game will remain unchanged, but “Fortnite and Rocket League already have tons of features we’d love to bring to Fall Guys—account systems, cross-play, squad vs squad modes, etc…We’re going to work hard on bringing more of these features to Fall Guys too!”
In Mediatonic’s FAQ segment, they note that regarding the game going free-to-play, they have “Nothing to announce right now!” While unconfirmed, it is highly likely the game will be coming to the Epic Games Store in the future.
Epic Games had previously obtained Rocket League developer Psyonix in 2019, but removed the game from Steam for new players. The game also went free-to-play.
Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout is available now on Windows PC (via Steam), PlayStation 4, Summer 2021 on Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. In case you missed it, you can find our review here (we highly recommend it!)
