Google is Shutting Down Stadia Games & Entertainment, Will Focus on Stadia as a Platform

Google has announced they’re shutting down Stadia Games & Entertainment, alongside the end of internal investing towards exclusive content for games.

“In 2021, we’re expanding our efforts to help game developers and publishers take advantage of our platform technology and deliver games directly to their players,” Stadia vice president and general manager Phil Harrison said in a statement.

He added, “We see an important opportunity to work with partners seeking a gaming solution all built on Stadia’s advanced technical infrastructure and platform tools. We believe this is the best path to building Stadia into a long-term, sustainable business that helps grow the industry.”

It’s also worth pointing out that Stadia Games & Entertainment boss Jade Raymond has left Google, to search for other opportunities. Any staff affected by the closures will get aid from Google to help them find new roles.

Any current Stadia users as well as future users will be able to play games on the platform, and there will be more games from third-party publishers brought to the platform.
