Rumor: Resident Evil 4 Remake Rebooted as M-Two Stuck Too Close to Original

Resident Evil 4

Anonymous sources have claimed that the Resident Evil 4 remake has been partially rebooted, after developer M-Two stuck too closely to the original due to feedback on Resident Evil 3 (2020).

As previously reported, VGC that “multiple development sources” told them a remake of Resident Evil 4 is in production, and will launch in 2022. “Dusk Golem“, a leaker who previously provided information on Resident Evil 8 rumors which seems to be true, also had information on the alleged Resident Evil 4 remaster.

In summation, those rumors claimed the game will be handled by M-Two, who were involved in the development of Resident Evil 3 (2020). Many former Capcom and PlatinumGames employees are also said to be involved, and the game will launch in 2022 or beyond.

The 2020 Capcom leaks claimed A VR version of Resident Evil 4 is also in the works, exclusively for Oculus devices. Those leaks did have elements come true, such as Resident Evil Village having DLC dubbed “Ethan’s Trauma” (revealed to be a pre-order bonus), and what was called a battle royale multiplayer game could be Re:Verse Resident Evil.

Now, VGC has reported on new information from “multiple sources” and “people with knowledge” about M-Two. They claim M-Two’s role has been “significantly reduced,” and that the main Resident Evil developers (Capcom Division 1, also the ones behind Devil May Cry) are now taking the game in a new direction.

This came after a major project review late in 2020, reportedly due M-Two’s desire to (in VGC’s words) “stick faithfully to the template of the original Resident Evil 4.” This was partly motivated by feedback from Resident Evil 3 (2020).

While critics praised it, fans had a more middling reaction [1, 2, 3]. Criticisms included how the game cut several areas found in the original, and overall being a step down from the remake of Resident Evil 2 (2019). Our review also condemned the lack of replay value, being quite short, and the restrictive level design. It did praise the graphics and story however.

Capcom’s production team reportedly want the Resident Evil 4 remake to be inspired by the original, but (in VGC’s own words) “with its own unique take on features, story elements and environments not necessarily confined to the blueprint of the original, similar to Resident Evil 2‘s use of Mr. X.”

Sources told VGC that the remake would be partially rebooted, with a release date pushed back to 2023. Similar overhauls are said to have happened with both Resident Evil 2 (2019) and Resident Evil 3 (2020).

Resident Evil 4 have always received high praise with nearly all of its ports [123456789]. As such, it is understandable why “yet another port” may grow sour to players and even investors; even with the game re-built accurately from the ground up but with new graphics.

The popularity of the game but no news on the remake during the Resident Evil showcase may also confirm that the game has been delayed for announcement.
