Square Enix have extended the Ever Crisis trademark to other countries, leading to more speculation that Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII will be remade.
We previously reported that Square Enix had trademarked “Ever Crisis” and “The First Soldier,” leading to speculation they will be sequels to Final Fantasy VII Remake.
It could easily be speculated that either or both names will be used for the game’s next installment; though it is possible some names could be trademarked to prevent others snatching them up. It is also possible these will be spin-off titles
Now, Final Weapon reports the Ever Crisis trademark has been extended to Canada and Europe. The Canadian trademark was made on December 17th, 2020 (as it had been in Japan), while the European one confirms it was filed January 19th, 2021. The copyright applies to video games, strategy guides, merchandise, and amusement facilities.
It could be possible that Ever Crisis will be a remake of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII- a 2008 PSP prequel to the original Final Fantasy VII focusing on Zack Fair, and his discovery of the truth behind SOLDIER. Due to that game being an action RPG, some suspected that story elements from that game may be implemented into future Final Fantasy VII Remake as a playable flash-back sequence.
Crisis Core did feature the Digital Mind Wave system. Players build up points by defeating foes, which spins a slot-machine. Good results on this can result in positive status effects, along with leveling up the player and their Materia, or performing powerful special attacks.
Due to elements of the story changing in Final Fantasy VII Remake compared to the original, it is also possible the events of Crisis Core would be different; whether it is part of Final Fantasy VII Remake or a stand-alone game.
As it is unknown how many games it will take to tell the story of Final Fantasy VII Remake, it could be surprising to see a trademark made at this stage. The story of Crisis Core features major events that would be revealed towards the end of the original Final Fantasy VII. On the other hand, development on “Ever Crisis” may not have even begun.
Whatever the case, developing both Final Fantasy VII Remake alongside a companion game undoubtedly means two development teams will be needed, and more pressure on Square Enix to juggle both important titles. That is; assuming Ever Crisis turns out to be a game.
We will keep you informed as we learn more.
