Universal Studios Japan have once again indefinitely postponed the Super Nintendo World opening due to COVID-19 coronavirus.
Bloomberg reports the postponement was due to the Japanese government’s state of emergency restrictions expanding in Osaka, Kyoto and Hyogo prefectures. The park is based in Osaka.
Residents must be home by 8 p.m. JST, along with the closing of bars, cafes, and restaurants. Non-essential travel has also been reportedly urged to be restricted. Organizers at the park reportedly stated they will reevaluate on a new date once the state of emergency has lifted.
The park attractions’ opening was delayed indefinitely at Universal Studios Orlando in early August 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Universal Studios Japan and Nintendo later announced in December 2020 it would open February 4.
The $580 million USD attractions include the VR-based Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge (Bowser’s Challenge), finding virtual coins around the site, and finding keys to unlock and fight Bowser Jr. Guests can also meet Mario and Luigi, eat Super Mario Bros. themed food, and buy merchandise based on the games.
Future sites for the attraction aside from Universal Studios Osaka and Orlando include Hollywood, California, Florida, and Singapore in Asia.
