Netflix have announced a live-action Resident Evil series, focusing on the Wesker family moving into New Racoon City, and the aftermath decades later.
The announcement comes via the NX On Netflix Twitter account (Netflix’ “home of all things geek“), providing a brief overview of the show. “When the Wesker kids move to New Raccoon City, the secrets they uncover might just be the end of everything. Resident Evil, a new live action series based on Capcom’s legendary survival horror franchise, is coming to Netflix.”
The accompanying image of the script, we see it is being directed by Bronwen Hughes (Stander, and director on episodes of The Walking Dead, Better Call Saul, Berlin Station), and written by Andrew Dabb (Supernatural, as well as several comics and graphic novels). Constantin Film will produce.
Dabb told The Hollywood Reporter his love of the series.
“Resident Evil is my favorite game of all time. I’m incredibly excited to tell a new chapter in this amazing story and bring the first-ever Resident Evil series to Netflix members around the world. For every type of Resident Evil fan, including those joining us for the first time, the series will be complete with a lot of old friends, and some things (bloodthirsty, insane things) people have never seen before.”
The Hollywood Reporter also states that Dabb will be the showrunner and executive producer (along side Robert Kilzer, Oliver Berben, and Marry Leah Sutton from Constantin Film). They also reveal that Bronwen Hughes is directed and executive producing the first two episodes.
Finally, The Hollywood Reporter also revealed more information about the plot. The series takes place across two timelines. In one, 14 year old Jade and Billie Wesker move to New Racoon City; a “manufactured, corporate town” in the Hollywood Reporter’s words. The sisters slowly realize that the town has its apocalyptic secrets, and that their father may be hiding them.
The series also shows events over a decade into the future; where only 15 million people are left alive on Earth as the T-virus has infected 6 billion people and animals. 30 year old Jade now must survive in a world of monsters, as what she is haunted by the truth about her father, sister, and herself.
Capcom submitting other franchises to Netflix for series is not wholly unexpected after the runaway success of the recent Castlevania. That was confirmed to be getting a fourth season earlier this year. A CG animated Dragon’s Dogma was also recently announced and revealed, premiering September 17th.
Resident Evil is coming soon to Netflix.
