Square Enix Confirms Dragon Quest XI S Definitive Edition on PC, PS4, and Xbox One Cannot be Upgraded from Original Version

Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition

Square Enix has clarified that when Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition comes to other platforms, players will not be able to upgrade or transfer save data from the standard editions on those platforms.

Square Enix made the announcement during the Xbox Games Showcase pre-show. Soon after, fans started speculating whether the basic version of the game on those platforms would be able to “upgrade” to the Definitive Edition, even through DLC.

However, it would appear that the game is being treated as its own entity; much like Persona 5 Royal is to Persona 5. The game’s Japanese website has an FAQ in English (thanks DrearierSpider!) revealing more information about the game.

Along with players being unable to upgrade from one edition to another by any means, or transfer their save data (except between Xbox One and Windows 10 with the Definitive Edition); the game is a port of the Nintendo Switch version.

This means it will not have the same graphical quality (texture resolution, lighting, etc) as the PC or PlayStation 4 originals. However, the FAQ assures players that the game will run at 60 FPS. It is also theoretically possible that fans may create graphical mods on PC.

You can find the relevant sections from the FAQ below.

  • What are the differences from the Nintendo Switch™ version?

In terms of content, there are no differences whatsoever. However, differences in spec may result in differences in graphical quality.

  • I already own the PlayStation®4 version of DRAGON QUEST XI. Is it possible to upgrade to DRAGON QUEST XI S?

Unfortunately, this is not possible.

  • What’s the difference between this title and the previously released DRAGON QUEST XI for PlayStation®4 (Have the graphics been improved, for example?)

This version includes a number of new features that were not present in the original DRAGON QUEST XI for PlayStation®4, including new storylines, the ability to switch to 2D mode, additional voice data, and more. It’s a port of the Nintendo Switch™ version, so the graphics are not the same as they were for the original DRAGON QUEST XI for PlayStation®4. Please note, however, that the resolution and frame rate are at least as good as they were for the original PlayStation®4release [sic].

  • What will happen to the trophies I earned in DRAGON QUEST XI for PlayStation®4?

This is a completely separate title to DRAGON QUEST XI. The trophy library is therefore also separate.
