Psyonix have announced Rocket League will be going free-to-play on all platforms this summer, and heading to the Epic Games Store.
The game initially released on Windows PC and PlayStation 4 in July 2015 for $19.99, before receiving Nintendo Switch and Xbox One ports later that year. The game has received lots of free-to-play style monetization over the years, including loot boxes that were later tweaked following the industry-wide backlash against the mechanic due to government intervention.
The switch to free-to-play will come with some perks for existing owners. This includes being rewarded with the Legacy status, which grants the following items. Those who were already playing the game prior the announcement will also receive Faded Cosmos Boost.
- “All Rocket League-branded DLC released before free to play
- ‘Est. 20XX’ title that displays the first year you played Rocket League
- 200+ Common items upgraded to ‘Legacy’ quality
- Golden Cosmos Boost
- Dieci-Oro Wheels
- Huntress Player Banner”
Everyone’s inventory and progress will carry over into the free-to-play update (along with cross-platform progression), and as players are upgraded to Legacy Status, they will receive all 200+ Common Items, should they have not unlocked all of them.
The free-to-play update will coincide with the game’s launch on the Epic Games Store. Players will be able to use their Epic Games account to transfer their progress to the game on other platforms. In May 2019, Epic Games acquired Psyonix.
While Steam owners can continue to play Rocket League, and will receive future updates, the game will no longer be available for new players on Steam following the free-to-play launch.
The free-to-play update will also come with major changes to Tournaments and Challenges. More details on the gameplay tweaks, features, and monetization model will be announced soon.
