Tencent Announces “Globally Marketed” Open-World Cyberpunk FPS “Syn”

Code : Syn

Chinese tech giant Tencent have announced Syn, a “globally marketed” open-world cyberpunk FPS game developed by subsidiary Lightspeed & Quantum.

PC Gamer reports the game was revealed during Tencent’s annual conference. Details are scant at this time, with only a tech demo showing us character customization, and a little of the world.

The tech demo shows the game running in real time in Unreal Engine. In character customization, we see the game utilizing strand-based hair systems through collaboration with Epic Games. Character creation and customization took place within the game’s open world, allowing characters to interact with their environment.

Players can play as one of three factions; each with a cyborg animal companion. These are the punk-like anarchy, the Enforcers presumably upholding the law, and Motorheads. The latter only shows customization of a vehicle however.

You can find the tech demo trailer (via a third party) below.

Tencent also recently opened Lightspeed LA, a US studio working on an open-world AAA PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X game. While LightSpeed LA is a subsidiary of Lightspeed & Quantum, nothing in the trailer indicates they are working on that game.

We imagine that Tencent would usually mention the game was being worked on by a brand new US studio in order to generate interest. On the other hand, the game was revealed over the weekend of June 29th, while the announcement of the new studio came on July 2nd. There is a slim chance certain details had not been finalized prior to the tech demo.

We will keep you informed as we learn more.
