Sony have finally revealed the PlayStation 5 during their New Future of Gaming presentation, along with a Digital Edition of the console.
As stated in the press release (via Games Press), and the PlayStation Blog, the console now uses a two-tone design, as oppose to the pure black of PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4.
The PlayStation 5 will have two options at launch, a standard model with an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive, and a digital model with no disc drive.
President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment offered his thoughts on the new console.
“With PlayStation 5, we are making a significant leap to deliver a truly new generation of transformative play experiences that will redefine expectations for what games can be. Worlds will be richer and more beautiful, they’ll captivate your senses in ways you didn’t think possible, and you’ll be able to experience them much more seamlessly, with lightning fast loading. Today’s showcase is just a glimpse of what’s to come in the next generation, and we want to thank our community for taking this journey to PS5’s launch with us.”
In addition, new accessories for the PlayStation 5 were announced. You can rundown on them (via Games Press) below.
- “PULSE 3D™ wireless headset – offering 3D audio support and dual noise-cancelling microphones;
- HD Camera – featuring dual 1080p lenses for gamers to broadcast themselves along with their epic gameplay moments;
- Media Remote – a remote control with built-in microphone to navigate movies and streaming services with ease; and
- DualSense™ Charging Station – for convenient charging of two DualSense™ Wireless Controllers.”
A price for either model was not revealed at this time. Bloomberg had previously used their sources to report that Sony were taking a “wait-and-see approach“ to the console’s new pricing (when compared to Microsoft’s Xbox Series X), along with scarcity of some parts causing issues.
They also reported that PlayStation 5 production would be “limited” in the first year. If Sony are having issues or otherwise taking a cautious approach, that would explain why the new DualSense controller was revealed before the console. Another factor was Sony attempting to prevent leaks.
