CD Projekt Red have announced that those who buy Cyberpunk 2077 on Xbox One, will also get the game for free on Xbox Series X when that console launches.
Speaking on Twitter, and retweeting Microsoft’s recent announcements of the new specifications of the Xbox Series X, the official Cyberpunk 2077 stated “Gamers should never be forced to purchase the same game twice or pay for upgrades. Owners of #Cyberpunk2077 for Xbox One will receive the Xbox Series X upgrade for free when available.”
While this might seem rebellious at first, it is worth noting that among the new specifications, the Xbox Series X will support “Smart Delivery,” enabling a user to buy applicable games for any Xbox system, then use them across any of the Xbox consoles they choose.
“This technology empowers you to buy a game once and know that – whether you are playing it on Xbox One or Xbox Series X – you are getting the right version of that game on whatever Xbox you’re playing on. We’re making the commitment to use Smart Delivery on all our exclusive Xbox Game Studios titles, including Halo Infinite, ensuring you only have to purchase a title once in order to play the best available version for whichever Xbox console they choose to play on. This technology is available for all developers and publishers, and they can choose to use it for titles that will be release on Xbox One first and come to the Xbox Series X later.”
While it is not confirmed CD Project Red is specifically using this Smart Delivery, the official Xbox Twitter account’s reply to the tweet make sit seem all but likely (or at least Microsoft approve if they don’t).
No such offer has currently been made for the PlayStation 5, as of this time of writing.
Cyberpunk 2077 launches September 17th for Windows PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
