Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC Character Terry Bogard, Update 6.0 Now Available

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate director and scenario writer Masahiro Sakurai has released a presentation detailing DLC character Terry Bogard, new Mii costumes, and update 6.0.

During the presentation, Sakurai detailed the Neo Geo’s history, the Fatal Fury and King of Fighters series, and how Terry Bogard would perform in game. However, Sakurai did emphasize the footage shown was month old, and some elements could differ from the final release.

Much like Ryu, Terry will face his opponent at all times in one-on-one fights. His speed is akin to his performance in older games, making him a little slower than Ryu. All but one of his moves are based on moves he uses in other games (his up air being a new move- somersault kick).

Terry can also perform a Dodge Attack by attacking straight after a spot dodge. All of Terry’s special moves have weak and strong variants. Some moves also have command inputs reflecting the original game to add to their power, essentially giving those moves four variants.

In addition, Terry also has two side-specials; one towards an opponent, and one away from the opponent. Furthermore, Terry can cancel out of some moves into special moves, allowing him to combo moves quicker.

Finally, Terry has access to his Super Special moves from past games. Should he reach 100% damage or more (or 1/3 of health lost in Stamina mode), you can enter command inputs for certain moves to execute them. The command inputs here can also be used in a “simplified” manner, without any diagonal input.

The new stage was also detailed – King of Fighters Stadium. The stages edges are walled akin to Real Bout Fatal Fury– but players need to be launched with great force to break through. This is to encourage playing the game “like a traditional fighting game”.

Guest characters from various SNK fighting games will also appear in the background, much like with the Persona 5 stage. While 20 characters appear, Sakurai mentions that Mai Shiranui will not be appearing as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate “is for good boys and girls of many different ages.”

The stage’s 50 songs also come from a variety of SNK games. Sakurai stated they never expected all 50 tracks to be approved by SNK, but they did. Sakurai emphasized such a large selection of music would be unlikely to happen again for other DLC characters.

Sakurai then demonstrated the character in Classic Mode, showing battles will feature three fighters one at a time in a stamina match, akin to the three vs. three mechanics in the King of Fighters series. Terry’s Classic Mode also features no “bosses” like with other characters.

The new Mii Fighter costumes were also introduced. They include Nakoruru (Samurai Shodown), Ryo Sazaki (Art of Fighting), Iori Yagami (King of Fighters), Akira (Virtual Fighter), and Jacky (Virtua Fighter). They are available today for $0.75 each. Simon, Chrom, and Incineroar Amiibo were also confirmed for release on November 15.

Finally, the 6.0 update was detailed. You can find the run-down below:

  • The online Battle Arena now allows you to send pre-set messages to other players.
  • Players who create an arena can also freely change the rules.
  • Stage selection can now be set to be random between battlefield and Omega forms.
  • Arenas can now be set to Elite Only.
  • Public Arenas with no password will allow anyone to join.

Terry Bogard will become available today, for $5.99.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available now for Nintendo Switch. In case you missed it, you can find our thorough review for the game here (we highly recommend it!)
