Microsoft has announced they’re redesigning the Xbox One user interface once again, and this time they’re removing a big part of the experience – Cortana.

The new home screen is being tested with Xbox Insiders in the Alpha and Alpha Skip Ahead rings, and they’re looking for feedback on the changes. This is the first big interface change since the redesign in 2017.

Microsoft has been slowly pivoting the focus of Cortana from their baseline, with the virtual AI assistant being removed from Windows 10 search altogether in the May 2019 update. Now, Cortana is a separate app you can grab from the Microsoft Store.

Cortana no longer competes with Google Assistant and Amazon’s Alexa, and Microsoft has admitted to this fact. Now, they’re offering Cortana as a more business-focused option, and are working at improving the AI’s capabilities of holding conversations.
