Obsidian Entertainment has revealed a new game mode for Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire.
The new mode adds optional turn-based combat to the RPG, as opposed to the original real-time (but pause-able) combat found in the Infinity Engine classics that so heavily inspired the game. Featured above, you can view a new video introducing the mode, with commentary from game director Josh Sawyer.
“It’s a very, very tactical mode of play,” Sawyer noted. “It highlights some abilities and debuffs and things like that, that aren’t necessarily as highlighted in the real-time with pause combat system. And it’s really a lot of fun.”
Fans can expect the new mode to be added to the game as part of a free update on January 24th. As this is a pretty big change for the game’s existing combat and systems, Obsidian is planning to launch the new mode in beta and will be heavily watching player feedback.
Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire is available on Windows PC, Mac, and Linux via Steam, GOG, and the Humble Store. In case you missed it, you can find our review for the game here (we highly recommend it!).
