The latest Famitsu and Dengeki PlayStation have new details for the recently announced game Ys IX: Monstrum Nox.

The new bits of information comes via interviews with Falcom president and CEO Toshihiro Kondo. In the interview Kondo confirms that series protagonist Adol will return, and that it takes place in a time after Ys Seven.

Most notably, Adol will appear in his oldest form yet (Editor’s Note: Featured image is Adol from Ys VIII), with his name having established a legacy as an adventurer all over the world. The hooded woman shown in the first artwork is key to the game’s overall story.

The main town, Baldeux, is a prison city with a number of vertical elements, as well as outer regions like ruins, grasslands, and forests. The new Guild system is an expanded form of the Drifting Village system in Ys VIII.

Party battling and more simple controls are making a comeback, albeit with new supernatural abilities obtained by the Monstrum, which let you perform equally unique actions. Reportedly, you can move as a shadow, and even run up walls.

The concept of the game comes from its subtitle, Monstrum Nox, which roughly translates to “Monsters Night.” Lastly, development on the game is roughly half complete.

Ys IX: Monstrum Nox is launching for PlayStation 4 sometime next year in Japan.
