Atlus Comments on Project Re Fantasy, Envisions Game as “What If” Tolkien-Made Fantasy World

It’s been awhile since we’ve heard anything regarding Atlus’ new Studio Zero-made fantasy RPG, Project Re Fantasy. We’ve finally gotten some kind of update, and while details are scant the game sounds like quite the undertaking.

Project Re Fantasy producer and director Katsura Hashino said while “the story setting is shaping up well,” it’s a massive undertaking as they’re building a totally new world – news from an IGN Japan livestream at this year’s Tokyo Game Show (via Games Jouhou).

Hashino likened the game’s scope and scale to something like a “what if” scenario – saying “if Tolkien (The Lord of the Rings author and creator, J. R. R. Tolkien) were still alive today, what kind of fantasy world would he make” after he had “seen the modern world.”

In essence, Atlus is framing the game as a new fantasy epic based on the things we have now in the modern world. Furthermore, Hashino noted that “rather than looking back to other fantasy games we’ve made up to now,” the studio is “starting from zero.”

Hashino said the overall world building is “taking quite a bit of time,” mostly because they’re building something entirely from scratch. The last teaser for the game was in December of last year. Most of us were confused at the time, however these new tidbits now make sense with that previous video.

Lastly, despite the fact that Atlus formed their new Studio Zero team just for making Project Re Fantasy, they’re also helping with Catherine: Full Body, which launches on February 14th of next year. After the launch of that game, Hashino is hoping to finally start sharing more for Project Re Fantasy.

A worldwide release is confirmed for Project Re Fantasy, however development platforms and a release date haven’t been confirmed.
