Nintendo revealed more information for the Nintendo Switch tonight, including two very hot button points.
The console will have free online play around launch, however it will be a paid service sometime this fall. A pricing model for the subscription was not announced at this time.
Nintendo also confirmed the system will not be region locked.

January 12, 2017 at 11:20 pmRegion free???…..hmmm, okay that isn’t a bad move.
Mr0303
January 12, 2017 at 11:21 pmI’m quite surprised that they mentioned the region lock on stage. I guess they read all the roasting comments.
Hopefully they have proper online accounts for the new paid service.

January 12, 2017 at 11:32 pmI’m waiting now for the excuses of N Fanboys for the justification of paid online since that’s an argument they like to use against Sony, still the region free is a good thing.

January 12, 2017 at 11:46 pmThis way we can import and ditch the abominations NOA calls localization.

January 12, 2017 at 11:54 pmNot region locked? That’s a nice little touch, but Nintendo Treehouse will still do a number on localizations. I don’t want to play Japanese language versions of games I buy a system for.
Arenegeth
January 12, 2017 at 11:57 pmRegion locking was my biggest issue with Nintendo when this generation begun and especially with the 3DS, which as far as I know is still the only handheld console in history to be region locked.
That’s before they went full retards with their localization and censorship and that became my primary grief.
But yeah good news, I had written off the Switch after my experience with the Wii U, mostly because I didn’t want to deal with NoA’s and NoE’s bullshit, but if the new Mario game is promising I may actually go day 1 on this thing.

January 13, 2017 at 12:25 amthe only exclusive game that I cared about in the presentation was Splatoon 2, and splatoon with no online is just not worth it [and I will NOT pay for online], just like before the presentation, my interest in this console is 0.
there’s also that FAST game, but I still haven’t bought NEO, and I never finished League.
TT
January 13, 2017 at 12:26 ami can only imagine how retarded their localizations will be. But maybe there’s the chance of fans making patches…unless Nintendo acts dickish and tries to prevent that

January 13, 2017 at 12:27 amno region lock= urge to buy rising

January 13, 2017 at 12:34 amRegion free is great, but that really sucks that you have to pay to play online now. Especially since I’ll really only be playing online for Splatoon 2 and maybe ARMS. If they’re gonna do a subscription service, then it better be like PS+; with exclusive discounts and two free games every month.
Captain Vidya
January 13, 2017 at 12:36 amTwo free VC games per month? I could dig it.
chaoguy
January 13, 2017 at 12:36 amFanboy here- Fuck ’em.
I never pay for online more than once. I might buy singleplayer, but forget paying for online otherwise.
Now, there is a mono-filament tier slim chance that online multiplayer & mechanics are free, but if you want to group up in lobbies you have to pay:
https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/60425f3ecd47c9673b377c1c153e5dbaa4048b98375372042bc5af1883d3d832.jpg
So if you have friends who live far away it sucks, but you can still play with randos.
Again, that’s very unlikely- and either way it sucks ass.
chaoguy
January 13, 2017 at 12:37 amWhy patch. If the majority of people buying X niche title buy direct from Japan and use guides to work the rest out, it’ll send a clear message. Especially when Treehouse is paid to modify a product no one touches (except from Japan)
Didney Worl
January 13, 2017 at 12:38 amYou bring up a good point. I wanna know if they’ll finally include cross buy for any VC games you previously bought on Wii U or 3DS.
Kiryu
January 13, 2017 at 12:40 amSame here man same here.I refuse to pay for online gaming but it’s easy for me anyway since i rarely play online.
chaoguy
January 13, 2017 at 12:42 amI got more into it with the PS3 and PC. I enjoy it, but I’ll take a well crafted nigh-infinite-replayability style game, or a massive 40/50 hour game over it.
Kiryu
January 13, 2017 at 12:44 amThe only game i play online is GTAV on PS3,it’s fun from time to time but otherwise i’m a singleplayer gamer.
Maelstrom
January 13, 2017 at 12:44 amI mean, paid online sucks. The Wii U was the only console that had free online, but it also had pretty much the worst online also. Paid may mean an improvement, but it still sucks. So, better online is the excuse?
Captain Vidya
January 13, 2017 at 12:44 amThe point above it says “After the free-trial period, most games will require a paid online service subscription from Nintendo in order to play online,” and the chart below it says that online multiplayer is only free during the trial. Shit sucks, but, again, if you don’t play online much (like me), it’s not a huge deal.
Kiryu
January 13, 2017 at 12:47 amYou better hope it will be better since they will make you pay for it
TT
January 13, 2017 at 12:48 amoh i agree, but i mean more so there’s something that can help people understand the dialogue better. Fighting games and platformers are one thing, but stuff like RPG’s or something story heavy would be alot harder to play through if you don’t know what they’re saying.

January 13, 2017 at 12:54 amwill it have free terrible games like sony does or very old but decent games like xbox does, or does nintendo think it can get away with a sub for just online?
Phasmatis75
January 13, 2017 at 1:03 amAt least with Sony you get 2 free games a month and discounts at the store, access to other features as well. Nintendo has none of that and I doubt we’re going to be getting free games.

January 13, 2017 at 1:50 amAs in you keep it for as long as you’re subscribed or it rotates out and you lose access to it ? If it rotates out and it’s just one game a month that’s pretty terrible and expected of them.

January 13, 2017 at 2:29 pmSo…this is basically a Vita.
Take away crappy proprietary overpriced storage, add TV out. Add tons and tons of gimmicks and some graphical bells and whistles. Switch=Vita 1.2
Looking at all the aliasing and massive pop-in for Mario Odyssey, the graphics seem to range from Vita tier to Wii U tier due to the new Vulkan API.
Half of the library will look pretty underwhelming on a standard HD television so I can’t consider this a true home console.
John Smith.

January 13, 2017 at 7:11 pmThat’s not how contracts work. Unless you are paying for a randomly selected two games which is not a stipend in the Plus contract they are technically perks of the program. You pay for access to the services and it comes with two free games monthly. Like Amazon Prime and free shows, music, and other bonuses.

January 13, 2017 at 7:32 pmI don’t think the NES/SNES games will take up too much space, but I can’t imagine the NS having a big HD, which could be a problem for other games.

January 14, 2017 at 1:04 amThat’s not how paying for things works. It doesn’t matter if it’s random or not, if you only get it because you hand over money, you are paying for it. That’s like when idiots don’t understand how taxes work and think governments provide things for “free”.
The main reason I pay for Amazon Prime is for the fast shipping, but that doesn’t change the fact that I’m still paying for the music and movies that I rarely use.

January 14, 2017 at 5:24 pmMy sentiments exactly. This is one reason I hate my Wii U. 4 games and I hit my limit because of the mandatory installs and large save files. This will be averted thanks to saves now being on the cartridges, but still any downloaded content will have to be on console, so it has me concerned.
I’ll be revisiting the console around Christmas next year, so by then we’ll know for sure, or have solutions.
Mr0303
January 14, 2017 at 5:54 pmI’m not sure if saves will be on the cartridges. The saves on the Vita are on the console itself.
