PS4 Sold Over 6.2 Million Units During 2016 Holiday, Worldwide Sales Break 53.4 Million

Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that over 6.2 million PlayStation 4 units were sold during last year’s holiday season.

This new milestone includes the time from November 21st to January 1st in Japan/Asia, November 20th to December 31st in the Americas, and finally November 21st to December 31st in Europe.

This brings the console’s total worldwide sales to over 53.4 million units as of January 1st.

“We are truly grateful for the tremendous support from our fans and partners, which has helped to make this holiday season one of the best in our history.” Andrew House, President and Global CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment said in a press release.

“We will aim to continue the momentum this year by broadening the PS4 title portfolio, further enriching the revolutionary gaming experiences on PlayStation VR and high quality gaming experience on PlayStation4 Pro, while also expanding network services. We will remain steadfast in making the PS4 the best place to play.”

Sony also made a note with PlayStation 4 software pushing over 50.4 million copies during the 2016 holiday season, both at retail and digital downloads.

The PS4 had some great momentum. Hopefully Sony’s dumb Pro project won’t mess things up.

Unsurprising, considering that PS4 has virtually no competition this gen, with the Xbone and the Wii U selling terribly in comparison. Not to mention all the games slated to release this year. Lots of big AAA titles as well as lots of niche titles give it a well rounded library which is attractive to any consumer.

Was happy with how things were going for plystation until Pro.
Mid gen upgrade garbage has no place in the console world.
I’ll probably buy PS5 at the end of the generation next time, who knows how many upgrades they’ll release.

Also if things go the way microsoft wants it with “no generations” anymore, just the same consoles with better specs released every year or two then that’s when I’ll stop buying them.

The PS plus is a good proof of that, their free games are garbage now.

Really? That’s what you’re upset about and not them being assholes like Microsoft and charging you a tax to use your internet connection that you already pay for?

    I love my PS4 Pro.

    Best console I ever bought.

    The Pro is awesome.

Really cool upgrade for those with a little extra to spend.

That mid gen upgrade will put off the PS5 from happening by the end of next year. More powerful PS4 means no need for a new console already.

If only MMORPGS followed that logic.

Some do, the one that charge at least can legitimately say they have server costs involved. Sony a Microsoft don’t maintain the servers people are playing on and thus can’t claim that playing online costs them anything.

The Pro itself is not the problem, but rather the trend it is starting with these mid generational upgrades.

The PS4 Pro is the new console. They just added Pro to the name instead of the number five.

Well deserved. I see announcements for new JRPGs and VNs here every few days. Leading system for this gen.

Not really, seeing as how the old PS4 can still play all the games.

It just doesn’t have some bonuses that Pro has.

I remember these upgrades since the PS2, so nothing new here.

They were never upgrades in power similar to the Pro. The PS2 and PS3 both got slim versions or more HD space. The Pro actually has more memory and processing power, which removes the advantage of uniform hardware. We already are seeing how some games perform worse on the Pro exactly due to that disparity.

No, what they’re doing bridging the gap between generations. Remember last gen how the consoles lasted nearly a decade?

They’re trying to avoid doing that again.

I have a feeling that when PS5 comes they’ll drop support for the original and Pro will take its place, then 5 will get a ‘Pro’.

Interesting idea, I doubt I’ll be around on these parts of the web in 10 years but when it happens I’ll be thinking “That Zombie sumthing guy was right!”

In that regard I see your point in it not being a new console. I still think of it as a new console though because it’s hardware is upgraded, it is literally a whole new console, not just a chip or card you can open your PS4 and insert and you’re still paying the price of a whole new console to get it unless you trade in your old PS4.

Actually it’d be more like 3-4, last gen lasted 7-8 years, and we’re going into the 4th. But true none the less.:)

Whatever it is, 40 million people who bought the real PS4 got scammed and are now stuck with an inferior console that may or may not play the new games like shit in the near future.

Got scammed by Nintendo with their N3DS and now by Sony with Pro.

They are making it hard for me to support their new systems.

Yeah, I get it. It’s just that if you already have a PS4, you really don’t NEED to upgrade.

    It’s nice, but not needed.

How did they get scammed? Its not like the Pro not existing would magically make the original perform better. People were already complaining about it’s performance, and Sony catered to the demand.

The original is 3 going on 4 years old now. The average console cycle is 5-6.

As for the N3DS, not many games actually use it, and it literally just replaced the original 4 years later, same price and all. The DS lasted maybe 5.

I’m not seeing the issue here besides not having “the best” forever.

PS Plus became garbage the moment Sony made it mandatory for PS4 online play. Before they had to put in some effort to attract customers.

So can you upgrade a regular PS4 to the Pro? No? Didn’t think so.
