Duncan Jones Will Direct Warcraft Sequel But Only With “Less Cooks in the Kitchen”

It’s no secret that lots of money, expectations, and editorial control drove most of the live-action Warcraft movie and its production. Its director, Duncan Jones, has publicly stated that he would love to return and direct a sequel, but only under certain conditions.

When responding to a fan on Twitter, Jones said that the sequel would have to sport a more modest budget, and have “less cooks in the kitchen.” We all know this means Jones was probably kept under the collective thumb of various production studio heads.

This exact sentiment was actually said by the adaptation’s previous director, Sam Raimi, back in 2013 prior to Jones being signed on as his replacement.

“Only once Robert [Rodat] was done [writing an original screenplay] did we realize that Blizzard had veto power, and we didn’t know that,” Raimi said in an interview with Vulture.

He noted that after nine months of script-writing, they “basically had to start over. And Robert did start over, but it was taking too long for the people at Blizzard, and their patience ran out. Honestly, I think it was mismanagement on their behalf.”
