New Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon Details, New Pokemon, Battle Royal, More

Nintendo and The Pokemon Company has revealed new details and gameplay for Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon.

A glut of new information, Pokemon, and features were revealed, including three new Pokemon, new forms for the game’s two legendary Pokemon, as well as a new Battle Royal mode.

You can find the new information below:

Pikipek

The first of the new Pokémon revealed is the Normal- and Flying-type Woodpecker Pokémon Pikipek, which can bore holes in trees by striking them up to 16 times per second. These strikes can do more than drill through hard wood—they can even shatter stone. Pikipek can attack distant opponents by firing seeds with enough force to embed them into the trunks of trees. This Pokémon also likes small glittering objects and will hide these amongst their food stores.

Yungoos

The second new Pokémon announced was the Loitering Pokémon Yungoos. This Normal-type Pokémon is known for its humongous hunger and has a terrible temper when hungry. The majority of its long body is made up of its stomach, and it is never satisfied due to its swift digestion. Trainers will encounter some Yungoos that possess an Ability no other previously discovered Pokémon has had—Stakeout. This Ability means that the Pokémon’s moves can deal twice the normal damage to any Pokémon that switches in or enters the field mid-battle.

Grubbin

The final Pokémon revealed was the Larva Pokémon Grubbin. This Bug-type Pokémon relies on its strong and sturdy jaws, using them as both a weapon in battle and a tool to help them burrow into the ground. Grubbin can spew sticky threads from its mouth and can wrap these threads around trees, enabling this Pokémon to swing around and become much more mobile.

A brand-new battle format called Battle Royal which debuts in Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon was also revealed during the Nintendo Treehouse Live segment. In previous games in the Pokémon franchise, battles have generally been Trainers facing off against each other one-on-one. Battle Royal is a new battle system where four players battle against one another at the same time in a furious melee. Each of the four Trainers in the battle chooses three Pokémon and sends one Pokémon into battle at a time. The battle finishes at the end of any turn when all of the Pokémon of one Trainer have fainted. The players are then ranked, and a victor is declared based on the number of Pokémon each Trainer defeated and the number of Pokémon each has remaining in play. This is a completely new way to enjoy Pokémon battles, and many interesting strategies will be discovered as each player must try to predict who will attack whom, or choose whether to act to save a player who is in a pinch in order to claim the number-one position before the battle ends.

Magearna

The Mythical Pokémon Magearna will be making its debut in Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon. Magearna was created by a scientist of uncommon genius 500 years ago, and it has the power to perceive the emotions, thoughts and feelings of other Pokémon. Stored in the centre of Magearna’s chest is the Soul-Heart, an artificial life which was created using the life energy of other Pokémon. Magearna has the Ability Soul-Heart, a new Ability that no other previous Pokémon has had. This Ability raises Magearna’s Special Attack by one each time another Pokémon in the arena faints.

In Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon, there is a QR Scanner function. Trainers will be able to catch the Mythical Pokémon Magearna by scanning a special QR code which is planned to be distributed in North America at a later date. More details for this will follow.

New forms of Solgaleo and Lunala, the Legendary Pokémon which appear on the cover of Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon, were also revealed. When releasing their mighty powers, these Pokémon will change in appearance. Solgaleo transforms into its Radiant Sun phase and Lunala transforms into its Full Moon phase.

Here’s some new gameplay for the game’s as well:

I don’t see how a nifty hint for if you forget, or if for a new player that doesn’t know about weaknesses is “dumbed down”.

Children need their hands held less. If they forget something like typing then they get punished for it. You fuck up, you get punished. It’s that simple. This adds a layer of safety to an already easy series.

couldn’t care less about legendary new forms, or the by now standard random new battle mode that will only be used like a few times in the game anyway

tell us something substantial that would actually make the whole experience better

    like contests or character customization

or a difficulty setting that provides an experience that’s more engaging than “super mega casual”

    June 14, 2016 at 4:29 pm

Not really that much of a big deal anymore, everybody knows it, or should know it, and could know it just by picking up the phone and looking it up.

So it’s more of a quality of life convenience if anything.

it doesn’t actually make the game easier or harder

the real problem with the franchise tho is that it lacks any option for those who wish an experience that’s engaging

I don’t even mean challenging, just engaging enough to make playing it right rewarding enough vs just pressing random buttons

right now pokemon has no alternatives setting or mode that offers the possibility of ever making a wrong choice that feels like a real risk, no actions carry any real weight and that’s honestly boring

Pokemon was never a “smart game”, to begin with. If you’re a younger player, you’re playing it to get cute monsters. If you’re an older player, you’re playing it to find out what cute monsters are effective to use when you play against others.

Pokemon’s actual game was never something that you actually played for any challenge.

and his ability is Stakeout, his moves can deal
twice the normal damage to any Pokémon that switches in or enters the field mid-battle.

no joke, he’ll actually wreck any pokemon switching illegally in

As a noob to pokemon that played Pokémon Y as the first game the whole type system was convoluted and nonsensical as hell to me.

Just look at this monstrosity they expect you know out of your head. To make it worse most of these combinations don’t make any fucking sense whatsoever.

Telling what attacks are effective during battle is the least they could do if they cant be arsed to overhaul the entire type system.

That is actually quite a bit of stuff to remember, especially when you bring dual-types into the mix. I’d say this is the reason most games stick to maybe a half-dozen at most.

I really don’t see the big deal, XD basically had this, only difference was it wasn’t accessible mid-battle.

They actually sorta teased customization with this trailer, since the opening scene of the battle-royal shows all 4 players with different outfits and skin tones.

Speaking of which, the battle-royal sounds interesting, hopefully we see it used in-game.

I haven’t played Pokemon in years and I can still remember the type advantages/disadvantages. Most of it felt like common sense actually contrary to your impression. Except Fairy since I stopped playing by then.

But your actual point isn’t wrong. Newcomers will find it a pain in the ass to remember everything.

I still expect a kid to actually do mistakes (then being punished for it), doing a research to know stuff (with a manual, etc.), then remembering what attacks do against certain types.

You know, the things I used to do when i was a kid playing Pokemon. It wasnt a very challenging game in the first place but I dont remember the old games holding my hand constantly
