Just wanted to talk about that…

    TL;DR

Cleavage censored, panties to spats (the leak was real), ages (16/17 to 18, retarded shit), most likely we’ll not have the Hot Springs DLC.

Text might not be censored because Atlus, but if Nintendo is supervising it, that’s not a given.

And with that, Nintendo have further killed more of their sales for this title. Then they willl have the gall to say Westerners don’t want these kind of games when this game flops in the West too.

If Atlus/NIS America were localising/publishing in the West, this wouldn’t be an issue as Atlus actually respect the market. NISA is a bit different, but they would publish the Atlus version in Europe and nothing more really.

Who does Nintendo honestly think would have any interest in buying this type of game in the first place? I think the intended target audience for this game can handle an anime girl in a bikini.

Besides, it’s not like girls under the age of 18 don’t already wear, and are advertised to be wearing, bikinis outside of Japan, anyway.

I really don’t think that game localisers will put everyone in burqas or clothed equivalents to appease a minority within a religious group. Outside of Muslim countries where this would be more justified due to the dominant values, many people, Muslims included, generally don’t care.

The blame should be firmly with Nintendo with this one and religions of all kinds should not be brought into it.

Good, now people can finally stop pulling the “it’s not -really- censorship if it’s self-censorship!” back when the only changes we knew of also applied to the JPN version based on early trailer to gameplay comparison.

It’s a shame, really, since this is such a niche title that any lost sales are probably going to hurt it quite a bit.

It is really starting to seem like that conspiracy I heard seems more likely. That being that NoA doesn’t really want these Japanese games to be brought over here in the first place and it making them so undesirable to the audience that does want them, thereby tanking their sales in the west and they will be justified in never bringing these titles over.

They do this because they only want to make the easy money off their core franchises like Mario; Zelda; Pokemon; Smash Bros. Again, this is just a conspiracy but with the recent track record with NoA and their horrible localization, don’t be shock if this theory is proven true.

  31. Neojames82
    Neojames82

Pretty much. That whole story of Atlus USA doing the localization is only part of the story. They are handling it, sure, but Nintendo still has the final say because that is how they are. So in all reality, Atlus might as well just given the localization to the Treehouse losers and not waste their team’s time.

I’m not. I’m just pointing out that not all cultures are the same. Developers can get away with stuff like that in Japan because the age of consent is 13. America on the other hand, as well as the European nations, are EXTREMELY prudish when it comes to the sexualization of fictional females under the age of 16-18 (depending on the countries age of content).

Some lesser known companies can get away with it, like Atlus and NIS. Nintendo, unfortunately, cannot.

By removing the chest slider and editing Lin’s outfits, as well as what they did with Fatal Frame (much to the sorrow of NeoGAF moderators), Nintendo is solving the problem BEFORE it starts. They’re going with the move that will give them the least amount of backlash. Like it or not, video game consumers are NOT the majority.

I don’t like these changes either, but I understand that Nintendo has a reputation to uphold within a close-minded society. If we want to fix this, then the best we can do is write to our local politicians, and get them to finally realize that there IS a difference between fantasy and
    reality.

Complaining to Nintendo via Twitter, email, Facebook, etc. is like applying a cure to the wrong disease. You can’t solve a problem if you don’t know where the problem has originated.

And besides, Atlus is calling all the shots with the localization of #FE, so why don’t you direct your anger towards them instead?

  62. Xekus

    April 24, 2016 at 6:33 pm

“Governments, private organizations and individuals may engage in censorship. When an individual such as an author or other creator engages in censorship of their own works or speech, it is called self-censorship. Censorship may be direct or it may be indirect, in which case it is called soft censorship. It occurs in a variety of different media, including speech, books, music, films, and other arts, the press, radio, television, and the Internet for a variety of claimed reasons including national security, to control obscenity, child pornography, and hate speech, to protect children or other vulnerable groups, to promote or restrict political or religious views, and to prevent slander and libel.”

Learn what censorship is, what is happening here falls under censorship, you can call it self-censorship if you want, but we are literally getting media censored due to it being considered politically incorrect, or any other bullshit excuse there is.
Again, it’s a niche game, for a niche audience.
Same with Fatal frame, there is zero reasons to censor it, it’s not games for children.

Europa and America is prudish? Oh god please, have you paid any attention to media the last few years, europa especially is not prudish at all, how about Bayonetta? That went perfectly fine, how is this any different? No in fact, it is different because this is a complete niche game for weebs, whom are now pissed of.

Sony get’s away without censoring games all the time, how is Nintendo any different, especially when it comes to their more mature games?
Solving the problem before it starts? There have been massive outrage with every game they have censored now, this is just nonsense you are spouting.

If it’s correct that we have a prudish society, Nintendo is a part of the problem because they are engaging in exactly that without taking a stance against it, and i will continue bitching about their pathetic and shitty practises.
Not that we are living in a prudish society is true in the first place, but ok whatever.

And no, Atlus may be handling the localization, but Nintendo is completely directing their hand.
“Any changes made to the in-game content were due to varying requirements and regulations in the many different territories Nintendo distributes its products”

And sure, i can understand Nintendo wanting to uphold their “games for childre” portrayal.
But come on, Bayonetta? Fatal frame? FE? This game? Xenoblade?
These are not children games, these are games being butchered because NoA think’s they should dictate what content adults here in the west should be seeing, and you’re defending that bullshit.

I will throw a god damn party the day Nintendo goes bankrupt, and i can’t stand nintoddlers who defend their bullshit, and right now you sound like one.

Once again, you are repeating yourself. And you’re missing the point spectacularly, and it seems you didn’t read my comment. It is impossible for Nintendo to censor themselves. TMS and Xenoblade are their IPs and they reserve the right to modify things in localization as they see fit. Period.

You are aiming criticism at the wrong target. If you want to get mad at something then get mad at American perceptions and social norms when it comes to media. Furthermore, pick your fights more carefully. Complaining over an underage high school student having her cleavage covered is just silly. Your personal views are your personal views. Bullshit, the developers are not censoring themself, NoA is the developers products, and vision, and they are doing it due to political ideology or because it’s “harmful and sensitive”

Take 5 fucking minutes to check the attitude of the people working at NoA.

Why should i aim my criticism at America when they are not to blame for this?
Xbox does it just fine, Playstation does it just fine, Steam does it just fine, in fact it steam is already releasing game’s with heavy sexual content, look at huniepop, there are already VN’s with bare tits on it.
You have no idea what the social norm’s is if you think it’s covering up bikini’s and completely altering games while removing actual content.
Are you going to claim that the loud minority of feminists, conservatives and every fucking tumblrina is the social norm?
    S e r i o u s l y?

This is purely Nintendo and NoA and their bullshit, stop defending this garbage.
Clearly you’re either a full blown SJW or a nintoddler, i’m having a hard time deciding which one.

The social norm’s in America is fucking irrelevant to games like this, and Fatal frame in the first place, and fucking especially to games being released in Europa, you’re droning so hard.

“Xbox does it just fine, Playstation does it just fine” – They do changes as well. And besides, since WHEN did the governments of the world care about what big tech conglomerates like Sony and Microsoft do anymore? The Japanese government is practically supporting Sony’s bad business practices by planning to bail them out if they decide to file for bankruptcy, and Microsoft lost an anti-monopoly lawsuit to the U.S. government, and guess what happened to them? Nothing. Not a god damn thing.

“You have no idea what the social norm’s is if you think it’s covering up
bikini’s” – On underage characters? Then I do know what the social norm’s are. Japan’s age of consent is 13 and that’s why developers can get away with stuff like that there. Also, in case you didn’t know, Japanese game companies remove blood and gore for games in their own countries! *gasp!*

“Clearly you’re either a full blown SJW or a nintoddler,” – Nope. I’m a straight up conservative right-winger. Also, it’s funny how you decry censorship when you are basically doing the same thing as limiting creative expression. Alternatively we could just spend money on good games that isn’t butchered, and stop supporting this shit.

It goes far beyond “covered cleaveage” aswell.
    FE had gameplay features removed
Plenty of games had dialogue outright removed, or massively changed, entire character’s changed.
Entire quest’s ruined, it goes on.

I’m not gonna excuse the changes, but I’m not gonna beat the horse before the races even begin either. I guess it’s just that despite everything, my head and my heart still agree that I should buy it. If it does indeed turn about to be bad, then I know firsthand (same goes for if it’s good, which I’m hopeful for), and then it’s something that can just be over and done with and then I can look toward to other things, such as Persona 5.

If you’re talking about the face petting thing, that was an awkward & unnecessary minigame that is nowhere near essential to the core of Fire Emblem. Most westerner gamers that I’ve conversed with agreed that it was odd and would not sit well with most Westerner mindsets.
The dialogue differences from what I’ve seen weren’t that big of a deal.
People don’t seem to understand that localization is not the same as having a direct word for word translation which can actually end up being detrimental in fully understanding what the characters are trying to say.

Regarding Bravely Second’s side quest debacle, Square Enix made changes as a result of all of the COMPLAINTS that Japanese gamers had with them! They hated the endings and said that it actually ruined the experience!

  92. CRES

The problem with this line of thinking is that companies will gain more sales from a censored product than an uncensored product is an unproven claim. We’d need comparison sales of the censored product and the uncensored product in the same region, and the only case we have for that is the original Mortal Kombat, which shows that fans wanted the uncensored Genesis version above the censored SNES version.

See the people who are offended are not the people who buy the games.

And it’s not the core of the older FE’s, but those days are long gone, Awakening revived the franchise, Waifu Emblem is what revived the franchise and is keeping it alive.
Without Awakening the franchise would be rotting in the grave.

Just like you, everybody i know who was planning to buy the game, ended up pirating it instead when they found out the removed content.

“The dialogue differences from what I’ve seen weren’t that big of a deal.

There are dozens of other games coming out every year. The last thing anyone needs is to buy another console. Even if you somehow beat every release you were interested in a year, there are always past games to look at.

People act like it’s a major loss to boycott or not buy a game, but there is no end to other ways out there to kill time. You’ll survive, even if you miss a Metroid, I guarantee it.

I think a good way to think about it is to think of it as a threshold. Some people, like yourself, have a higher threshold for censorship then some others. Others have a much lower threshold for censorship, to the point where any level of censorship is too much. At that point it is less to do with the actual content of the censorship and more to do with the principle of censorship. The reason everything has been blowing up recently is because a number of games have been censored, and the only explanation for it seems to be because of SJWs dictating what is acceptable for everyone else, which all came to ahead with Fire Emblem Fates and now everyone is hyper sensitive to it.

Me personally, I’m against any kind of censorship on the matter of principle, but I do have a threshold of what I would tolerate, or at the very least understand. But TMS is really testing that threshold.

Yeah, I guess you’re right. It feels like more of a loss than it actually is. Looking at it in a positive light, I have more money to spend on games that do what I want!

Hahahahahahaha so much censorship they still expect anyone to care about it?

Nintendo really expects anything they put “FIRE EMBLEM” on the title to sell like hotcakes no matter how much they butcher it.

Well, other examples kind of say that this is rather small, not really that big. It’s censorship nonetheless.

I do feel as if normalfags (and non-normalfags) will now use “At least it’s not FEF bad.” to still buy it…

What would the point be though? All he would do is comeback with even more arguments and we would just go back & forth, back & forth, back & forth all while he throws obscenities at my face no doubt. Which makes it more about him trying to assert his dominance over me at that point.
It would get nothing productive done. No matter what, it will have all been meaningless just like our short lives on this earth.

Well anyway, Thanx for keeping an interest in me you sexy motherfucker. ;)

    NEVER FORGET

    NINTENDO LIED

They made a big deal out of “understanding what the fan wanted” from the game, having Atlus in charge, releasing it with the original JP audio and all.

In truth, the game is actually censored anyway, and Nintendo was behind it and Atlus didn’t have anything to do with it.

It’s also why Xseed isn’t working with Nintendo anymore, because when Nintendo asks you to localize something, they still want to force you to use their standards to censor everything.

It’s very confusing, yes. I think 2 bubbles are needed though to stress the point.

First would be “people that would refuse to buy a game with controversial content if it was uncensored” and second would be “people who refuse to buy a game with controversial content at all”.

The first bubble is as we see it. A very tiny portion of it would overlap with the blue bubble. The second bubble would be almost completely on top of the first but not touching the blue bubble.

    cen·sor·ship

Seriously, if you’re trying to prove me wrong, do not use Wikipedia. The information there is often un-sourced and is often incorrect.

Here’s the real definition of censorship:
    cen·sor·ship
    ˈsensərˌSHip/
    noun
    noun: censorship
the practice of officially examining books, movies, etc., and suppressing unacceptable parts.

“because they are engaging in exactly that without taking a stance against it” – Because it’s out of their control. There is nothing they can do about it.

“Same with Fatal frame, there is zero reasons to censor it, it’s not games for children.” – https://pietriots.com/2016/02/03/stuck-in-the-middle/

“For example, a swimsuit costume in Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water was removed and replaced with Samus and Zelda themed costumes due to the age of the characters and certain laws in Europe about the depiction and so-called “objectification” of minors. Dead or Alive Dimensions, a 3DS fighting game from a series known for having an emphasis on attractive girls and women, had a model viewer outright removed for the same reason. This also affected the Western release of Bravely Default, where the teenage characters in the games fell victim to the same European Laws, again concerning costumes that were toned down for sexuality. As you can see, sometimes laws in Europe dictate western localization, even for American games.”

Hey, did you know, there is this country called Germany. It has laws, laws that prevent the sexualization of minors, that often dictate western localization, even for American games.

    Who would’ve thunk it?

“I will throw a god damn party the day Nintendo goes bankrupt” – Do you wish you could live in an alternate reality where Sega won the 16-bit console war then?

I love how people here are whining at Nintendo for this, when games like Bayonetta and Devil’s Third came over untouched.

This is a very normal process for Japanese games. I’d say the fact that you don’t understand or know about this suggests that you aren’t very knowledgeable about the field.
