Tekken X Street Fighter is Officially Put on Hold

tekken x street fighter 03-07-16-1

We’ve learned via GameSpot) that Bandai Namco has officially putTekken X Street Fighter on development hold.

“When we develop fighting games, we try to keep the core community in mind as well as the wider audience that wants to play these games,” game director Katsuhiro Harada said to GameSpot. “But currently the situation is with fighting games, you have Street Fighter V that just released–a lot of people are playing that fervently–and there’s a large crowd out there waiting or Tekken 7.”

Harada elaborated: “We don’t want to split these communities, so a good window in which to release Tekken x Street Fighter is something that’s become difficult recently. So it’s on hold for the moment.”

While Capcom’s Street Fighter X Tekken has seen release, it was announced together with Tekken X Street Fighter. Harada said they’ve released few updates for the game because of many reasons.

“One of the reasons is, Street Fighter X Tekken was released,” Harada said. “That still had updates until recently. One interesting thing we’ve seen with that title when it came out was that it’s not quite what we expected.”

According to Harada, Bandai Namco was simply looking for the right time to launch Tekken X Street Fighter. “It might seem like we haven’t started on it at all, but the character lineup has been decided upon since a very long time ago. And we’ve already finished the polygon models, moves, and systems.”

Makes business sense given SFV is only partially launched and Tekken 7 is still upcoming.

Yeah, it isn’t canceled, they just want to get Tekken 7 out first. Some other sites had a poor choice of words in their headlines implying it was flat out cancelled.

It’s a good idea. If it came out before Tekken 7, it would end up splitting playerbases like Harada says, or it will just end up being forgotten between SFV and Tekken 7.

Figured it was going to take a while to come out when Tekken 7 was announced before we’d even seen gameplay of it.

Either way, I’m glad it’s not cancelled outright. I was a lot more interested in it than SFxT.

I wasn’t terribly excited for that crossover and prioritising Tekken 7 is the right call to make.

    Well, no shit.
I guess Namco is learning from Capcom’s mistakes from the previous generations.

I wish they would have worked on this instead of Tekken.

    Or CvS3.

The only feature not currently in SFV is the ability to purchase things with cash.

What the hell? I thought it was already “On Hold” for a long time. What did they do now? Changed the position of the only poor sod that was probably working on it just to make it “official”?

I mean, this thing has been announced for how many years now?

This just reminds me of when I see a fangroup doing like game mods or subs for shows or something like that making a blog post saying “we’re not dead guys!”

naturally they’re never heard from again.

I know that this doesn’t mean it is cancelled, but it doesn’t sound good for the overall future of the game either. We shall see but…don’t be shocked if the game is put out to pasture in the future.

At this point they might as well call it Tekken x Street Fighter Forever. We’ve had Tekken Revolution, Tekken Tag 2, Pokken. I mean it was announced SIX YEARS ago. This is something I’d expect from Square Enix, not Bamco.

I doubt we’ll ever see this game get made. The fighting game market is shrinking back to the pre SFIV days in popularity. Companies will be hesitant to continue investing in it.

It is the right business decision for them.

I am extremely looking forward to seeing how the SF characters look in Tekken style.

Because in my opinion, SF4’s character modelling style looked like s**t, and SF5’s modelling style isn’t that much better.

Modern day Namco – ‘dont take risks with new IP or spending too much money on existing IP’, whereas modern day Capcom are just like, ‘yeah we’ll make up the fallout from our mediocre game through DLC and expansion packs disguised as new releases’. No wonder this game never went past prototype with the way these companies are being run.

Where did they say it was cancelled? It’s on hold because they don’t want to cannibalize their own sales with the latest SF and Tekken games. They quite clearly said this.

Capcom rushes the game out and its shit. Namco has been working on it and it will probably be good. Sounds right.
