Team Ninja’s Nioh Gets a Western Playable Alpha Demo Later in April

Koei Tecmo has announced that Nioh, their upcoming samurai-laden demon killing game, will get a playable demo.

The Team Ninja-developed game will be playable in alpha, which is set to launch on the PlayStation Store from April 26th through May 5th, in both North America and Europe.

Both Team Ninja and the game’s general producer, Kou Shibusawa, talked up Nioh’s development.

“Ten years have passed since Nioh was originally announced. Even during all that time though, gamers would always ask about it at events like E3 and Gamescom. We always felt support from the gamers around the world for this title,” said Kou Shibusawa, the game’s general producer.

“Now, finally, Nioh — a game created with the entire power of Koei Tecmo — will be released in 2016. In appreciation to all the fans who have waited so long, and in order to have gamers everywhere try Nioh as soon as possible, we will release the Alpha Demo this month. We hope you enjoy overcoming the challenges in this masocore take on samurai action — Nioh.”

Team Ninja also sounded off regarding the game’s development. “Set in a time of civil war in Japan, Nioh not only incorporates classic elements such as samurai and supernatural creatures from Japanese folklore, but also offers the exhilaration of an authentic samurai sword fight straight from Team Ninja, the team that defined brutal action games,” the studio said.

“We will give gamers a taste of this all-new experience in the Alpha Demo releasing this month. But it will only be available for a limited time so play it while you can! Players who manage to clear a stage of this the Alpha Demo will be able to download The Mark of the Conqueror DLC. This will entitle you to some special DLC in the full game. We also want to hear your feedback on the game! We will hold an online survey while the demo is available so let us know what you think and how we can make it even more fun.”

Nioh is set to launch exclusively for PlayStation 4 sometime later this year, worldwide.

It looks really interesting, so I can’t wait to get hands on with it.

Also: “Players who manage to clear a stage of this the Alpha Demo will be able to download The Mark of the Conqueror DLC. This will entitle you to some
special DLC in the full game”.

That’s really cool. Demos that unlock things in the main game are fantastic.

I’m not a fan of the Souls games, but I’ll give this demo a try. Also it is pretty cool that they give you the option to earn a DLC.

So… Pokemon meet Dark Souls? Even though I luv me some Dark Souls, this does not really speaks for me. In fact, this Pokemon thingie, where he calls some pets… eh… nah. Also, not a big fan of old Japan, so I guess I pass.

Kinda amusing/sad that people refer to everything slightly more challenging than the average modern game as “Souls-like” or inspired by it, especially when the Ninja Gaiden series has been much harder, many years before Souls was even a thing.

I’m generally not against remakes, but one thing you shouldn’t do is mock the original games and piss on the fanbase. I’m sure DmC is a competent game (but nothing close to the DMC series), but what Ninja Theory did was a PR suicide.

  48. Kiryu

PR suicide indeed.I never understood Capcom’s decision to reboot the series after 4 was the best sold game.I think Capcom in their arrogance forgot the wise quote;if something isnt broken don’t fix it.

  49. Mr0303

DMC4 was the best selling hack and slash game after the God of War games and to this day it had the best and most complex fighting system in any action game. I think it was Inafune’s push to westernise Capcom’s franchises that led to this.

I’m not sure if RE6 flopped, but sales were less than 5, which should’ve sent a clear message. I can also bet that DMC4SE sold more than the DmC remaster. If anything I hope at least Capcom can still compare numbers and make their conclusions.

  52. Kiryu

Either way, I’m so not ready for “The Dark Souls of Onimusha” articles Kotaku will shit out. Like Onimusha (especially the first) wasn’t already grueling and oppressive enough.
