Oculus Will Support Mac if Apple “Ever Releases a Good Computer”

pc master race 05-10-15-1

We’ve known that Oculus support for Mac isn’t something that is coming immediately, if not at all.

However, Oculus founder Palmer Luckey had some very interesting comments regarding Apple’s computers, and whether or not they’re able to even handle the virtual reality device.

“[Rift support] is up to Apple,” he said to VentureBeat. “If they ever release a good computer, we will do it.”

Palmer defined a “good computer” as one that can handle the processing demands of VR software – where games have to be able to run at 90-to-125 frames per second, to avoid users getting motion sickness.

Luckey said that currently, Apple doesn’t have an option right now that you can buy to meet these requirements.

“It just boils down to the fact that Apple doesn’t prioritize high-end GPUs,” said Luckey. “You can buy a $6,000 Mac Pro with the top of the line AMD FirePro D700, and it still doesn’t match our recommended specs. So if they prioritize higher-end GPUs, like they used to for a while back in the day, we’d love to support Mac. But right now, there’s just not a single machine out there that supports it.”

How do you guys feel about Luckey’s comments? Are you gaming on a PC rig? Sound off in the comments below!

It sounds like a burn, but he really isn’t wrong – laptop GPUs just aren’t good enough to push VR. With the amount of money people waste on Mac hardware, they’d probably assume ‘it just werks’ and would make themselves sick in the process. Bad first impression for VR.

$6000 for a Mac Pro that’s weaker than a $800 PC build? Talk about overpriced garbage.

I don’t really pay attention to Apple products, but a $6000 Mac that can’t run VR? Fucking hell, I could probably build some kind of super computer with that money that’ll last 10 years at LEAST!

    accurate comment is accurate
apple computers are severely lacking high end GPU options, even if you order off their site a custom one, there’s really no good upgrade options and of course it’s not like you can just buy the GPU and instal them in yourself

kind of a shame really because despite the bad reputation they get in general, they are not bad computers, overpriced sure but not bad, except for the GPU, which is a common weakness of them all

As the collective of PC users breathes in deep and shouts: That’s what we’ve been saying for years about everyone on macs!

It’s no secret that macs are overprices garbage.
Even the good ones that can keep up with high end pc’s (they don’t exist anymore, but all the more my point) they cost an extraordinary amount more.
They’re idiot boxes for people who are more concerned about having a status symbol then a good computer.

they probably have over the top RAM and CPU or some bullshit, but MACs were usually not used for video games until a few years ago, so I cant say I am surprised at macs not having good GPUs.

What to be noted here is the purpose of the computer not it price range.
The FirePro line of AMD’s graphics card (much like Nvidia’s Quadro) are meant for professional workstation (CAD/CAM/CAE, graphic design or even complex scientific simulation). They also feature ECC memory (error correcting code) which cost a hell of a lot more than your standard GDDR5 or DDR3/4.
These PC’s weren’t meant for gaming so there is no reason to even cite them as an example.
However Apple doesn’t do gaming just either your hip laptop that “just works” or a workstation that also “just works”.

    CPU: i7-6700k – $400
    GPU: GTX 980 Ti x2 (or Fury X x2) – $1200
Mobo: Asus Maximus VIII Extreme – $500
    RAM: G-Skill Ripjaws VIII DDR4-3000 4×16(64GB) – $400
    SSD: Samsung 850 Evo Series 1TB – $300
Case: Phanteks Enthoo Primo – $250
    Cooling: EK-Watercooling Parts – ~$300
    Monitor: 4k g-sync/freesync – ~$500

All in all, that comes to around $3950 and blows a $6000 Mac out of the fucking water. I guestimated the cost of the watercooling parts, but really the cost wouldn’t be more than a few hundred dollars more as a worst-case scenario.

Note: This seems like an objective view on the topic, NOT a biased fanboy, anti-Mac attack.

I think this was the video I watched ages ago on why Mac’s aren’t good for gaming. If I remember correctly, Mac’s WERE popular for gaming in the 80’s, but Apple decided to change direction towards productivity, because they thought it would be more profitable. Hence why you have a $6k Mac that can’t handle the Rift; it’s intended for productivity, not gaming.

I tend to see more people go with Mac because they want something that “just works” more than anything else, so I have to disagree on the “idiot box” somewhat.

Where that really come in is when you have people willing to pay an extra few hundred, if not more, for slightly less cheap feeling plastic because it’ll “last longer”. Or they “have to have” one for media production. Schools also get deals on them for their classrooms.

It was referring to the people who would buy said computer.

Idiot box means for people who lack either the knowledge or the desire to learn how to configure personal computers. In other words, they want something that ‘just works’ without having to do any major configuration.

In a way that philosophy isn’t wrong either. I have an irrational hatred of Apple products.

But the fact that you can do little to change it basically means uniformity throughout a business as well as reduced risk of messing something up on the machine. Productivity tools particularly in image editing and animation are also top notch on Apple products from what I understand. My company for example primarily uses PCs however our graphic designers were given Macs instead.

6k is still a ripoff to me however.

Yeah, I know, what I was disagreeing with was that being the primary reason.

I see just as many, if not more comments on the supposedly superior build quality as I do the usual misconceptions such as “Macs don’t get viruses”.

Even when arguing hardware cost people run back to being unable to match the ‘feel’ of a Mac as a counter argument.
