IBM Reveals Sword Art Online: The Beginning, a Real-Life Virtual Reality Project

IBM Japan has revealed (via Games Talk) Sword Art Online: The Beginning, a brand new virtual reality project set to recreate the actual virtual world popularized in the Sword Art Online series.

Featured above, you can view a teaser trailer for the new project.

The project, while not currently poised as a traditional game, will be played by moving your physical body, instead of using a controller. The creator of the series, Reki Kawahara, is describing it as something entirely different from any game seen thus far.

The new project uses a completely next-generation computing system dubbed the “Cognitive System,” which is powered by IBM’s cloud-based system “SoftLayer,” which is supposed to recreate the semblance of a tangible, virtual world.

On the project’s official website, IBM is taking applications for users up until March 4th for an alpha prototype test, which shall go down between March 18th and 20th in Tokyo. Only 208 lucky applicants will be allowed to try out the early prototype.
