Action RPG “Livelock” Combines Robots With Loot-Collecting Gameplay

Though its name can easily get confused with privacy service Lifelock, Perfect World Tuque Games’ new robot-centric action RPG Livelock takes its name from a programming term meant to describe the situation where two commands trigger each other into a nonstop loop of action that cannot be broken. Thankfully, you don’t need to know any of this to appreciate the game, since it seems to be more concerned with letting you destroy mechanized enemies rather than work on mathematical algorithms.

Livelock is a twin-stick shooter, inspired by old arcade games such as Robotron, Smash TV, and Heavy Barrel, that has you playing the role of a human whose consciousness has been uploaded into a machine. The story takes place after a cataclysmic event strips Earth of most of its habitability and resources, causing humans and their recently liberated machines to fight each other over the scraps that remain.

Though it plays like a fast-paced shooter, there is still an emphasis placed on character building and loot collection. The game has a campaign mode where you can focus on the story itself, or an alternate mode called “Open Protocol Mode”, which sounds like the post-game scenario Blizzard used in Diablo 3. In open protocol mode, everything is randomly generated and allows the character to replay levels several times in an effort to obtain loot and/or gain levels.

No date was given, but it’s expected to release on Xbox One, Playstation 4, and PC later this year.
