Report: Konami to Stop All AAA Development with Exception of PES Series

metal gear solid v the phantom pain 09-18-15-1

It seems as though the situation at Konami has gotten progressively worse, as we’ve just received a report the publisher will cease all development of AAA titles.

This new change in the company’s future games comes with the exception of the Pro Evolution Soccer series. Gameblog, the same site that broke the story of Fox Engine director Julien Merceron leaving the company, says this is the case according to their sources.

However, Eurogamer also confirmed the report via their own sources, stating that this development might have been the reason why Merceron left the studio. This seems to be going against what Konami stated earlier this year about not solely focusing on mobile games.

Konami has yet to provide a comment, but we’ll update this post should the publisher issue a statement.

Sad! Just sell off the IPs, let someone else use them.

Oh man. How horrible. And they’ll keep the IPs to make Pachinko machines too.

    Site, not sight.

But yeah that’s depressing but not exactly surprising. At this point when I hear bad news involving Konami all I can think is this.

And this is how the story ends.

I shall remember you by the high points, not by the last agonisingly delusional months.

Honestly, who didn’t see this coming? Konami have never really been that invested in AAA development or consoles for that matter (name me an AAA franchise they have under their belt besides MGS, SH and Castlevania?). It’s always been about the arcade to them.

Still not buying this, as despite (or perhaps because of) Kojima being gone now, Konami is in a perfect spot with the series; they’re left with an excellent engine and the perfect formula for yearly or so open-world iterations.

Well, ain’t this rather bittersweet. On one hand, with all the shit that Konami’s pulled lately, this isn’t a surprise, and I’m almost glad to see them finally get the hell out so the gaming community doesn’t have to put up with their bull anymore. On the other, it’s really rather sad to see the producer of such incredible game franchises as Castlevania, Silent Hill and Metal Gear stoop to such low points and to finally drop out of it all. I really don’t know whether to say “Good riddance,” or “Why’d you have to go?” But, regardless, it’s happened now, not much else to be said other than this is a thing that’s happening.

well they don’t really have anything that is worth selling off. the Metal Gear series is pretty much done unless they want to do a massive retcon. Silent hills, castlevania, and other IPs wouldn’t be worth anything since the last silent hills games were shit and castlevania became a god of war clone. The only thing they own that would be worth something is the Love plus games in Japan, and the PES series.

The best thing they could do with Metal Gear would be to remake the first two Snake games or continue with Raiden. Maybe if they were that ballsy they would make The Boss game Kojima talked about once.

There’s always forward with Metal Gear. They could set games further after MGS4 or just make or continue spin-off series’ like AC!D.

Still, imagine if Platinum could get their hands on Metal Gear.

The whole industry must be carefully observing Konami like the proverbial canary in the coal mine. For years almost all big publishers have dipped their toes in mobile and tried to use their know IPs to sell to the mobile crowd with low to no success.

Konami is now their guinea pig to see if unceremoniously dropping their old customers in favor of going all out and courting this new (and very fickle) crowd is worth it. I honestly don’t see Konami having much success in the long term and even then it will be mostly in Japan. Crazy as it sounds and despite their dickish behavior Konami may have done gamers a huge favor

AAA is spending a ton as an attempt at a huge profit, right? What other games do they have that sell AAA worthy numbers with MGS pretty much over? If I didn’t see a chunk of this stuff with Konami, I’d think it was a good sign of the older IPs coming back.

Many of these Games you said aren’t AAA-only. Castlevania was it’s best as a 2D-Sidescroller-Action-RPG and there are good playable on an Handheld and an Controller with Smartphone-Holder.

I’ve an Smartphone-Holder for my own and played Another World, Duck Tales and Sonic on my Smartphone, with the PS3-Controller.

I was just mentioning Konami IPs that were franchises and were popular popular, even if it was a niche, I think plenty of hardcore gamers could recognize. I did forget Tokimeki memorial and ZoE.

Now they are Pachinko machines and series that will never continue. It hurts even worse because Konami usually had some unique spins of certain genres.

They’ll have success, for sure, but the thing is this is a fleeting and, as the other guy said, very fickle market.

I’m not being rude or condescending when I call these people casuals. They like their simpler games that they can play for a little bit and move on from. It’s not bad to try to make money by playing to them. Just look at how good the Wii did at launch.

But they’re not a stable market and you need to be able to either keep the older consumer trust or, failing that, manage to constantly re-invent so you can keep up with their new desires. Just look how much of a dried up well the Wii was (outside of first party games) after 2008 or so.

  46. Derek

They would rather hold on to their IPs to spite you all. And this is the future of Japanese ggaming in a nutshell. Japan thinks we are a dead audience now. Pack up and find something else to play.

I didn’t grow up with Konami, so I really don’t know this affects me much, but MGS has been the staple of gaming for ages. It’ll be a shame for its IP to end just like that.

  48. EdgyDude
    EdgyDude
    September 19, 2015 at 6:36 am

To be fair the Wii’s problem outside 1st party games had more to do with 3rd parties’ laziness than the hardware itself. Sure it didn’t compare to the specs of the PS360 but damn were they lazy with most of their efforts (mini game collections, port of old games with tacked on motion controls, light gun games based on PS360 IPs or just crappy new games like Spyborgs).

I see Konami’s future more akin to King’s or Rovio, they might have a lot of success with one IP but it will be hard to replicate at best and fleeting at worst.
