Square Enix has Announced the PS1 Era-like RPG, Ikenie to Yuki no Setsuna, for PS4 and PS Vita

Square Enix has announced Ikenie to Yuki no Setsuna, their upcoming Tokyo RPG Factory game, for PlayStation 4 and PS Vita.

The game is coming to Japan sometime early next year. Featured above, you can view the game’s debut trailer.

Square Enix describes the game as a “pure fantasy, true RPG,” and it definitely seems that way.

Fans can expect towns to frequent and shop in, party customizing and organizing, challenging dungeons, dangerous enemies, and an ending that will reportedly make you cry like a baby.

We’ll keep you guys posted.

If it comes over seas I’ll definitely be watching this even if I have to import it from the US.

An actual JRPG developed by a Square studio… and it doesn’t look half bad either, what black magic is this?

The battle system reminds me of CT… although if it’s a PS1 Square throwback, I really hope there’s junctioning, and I’m actually being half-serious.

Oh, shit, finally. No schools, no visual novel sections, top down view. For the Vita? I approve. Hopefully it gets localized sooner rather than later.

So basically someone at Squaresoft discovered RPG Maker, and they’re just hoping no one else at the company will figure out their secret?

Silicon Studios, not an internal Square Enix studio.

Most of SE’s good games post-merger haven’t been from an internal team.

this looks like if they made an RPG in the late 90s but were somehow able to Upscale it into HD. Very nice.

I really like the art style they are using. You can’t see much else of the game, let’s see how this ends up.

I was wondering if we’d ever get round to evoking this era of gaming, instead of slavishly worshipping the NES.

I’m so down for the Sega Saturn or PS1 inspired games. Only one that really comes to mind is Freedom Planet (I know a lot of people say it’s a lot like Sonic but really it just SCREAMS Saturn to me, that and Ristar more than Sonic honestly.) and it’s a really underdone era to homage.

Wait, this is that Project Setsuna thing I saw at E3? Man that’s neat, I kinda forgot about it but that was a cool little thing back at the SE press conference.
