#GamerGate-Focused Society of Professional Journalists Event is Evacuated Due to Bomb Threats

koubek 08-17-15-1

The Society of Professional Journalists held a panel this past weekend featuring prominent members of #GamerGate, however, the event was prematurely shut down and evacuated due to multiple bomb threats sent in to the event coordinators.

WPLG-TV of Miami reported alongside the Miami-Dade Police that a response was sent out to the Koubek Center at Miami Dade College around 2:30 p.m., following being tipped off to the bomb threat(s) made against the event and the building.

The report claimed someone at the Miami Herald got an email for the bomb threat, and quickly sent it off to the police. Following an evacuation and a police investigation of the building, no explosives were found at the scene.

According to sources at the event, the event was blanketed with bomb threats on social media. These weren’t taken seriously as the entire facility was thoroughly checked and locked the night prior – with a guard on watch throughout the night until it kicked off the following morning.

To be clear, the bomb threat police and event staff actually responded to had a specific detonation time – towards the end of the program. Police responded and evacuated the panel with roughly a half an hour left. At this point, the venue was essentially open and had visitors perusing the facility between the first and second panels – meaning the building was no longer secure.

“As a journalist myself, if someone cares enough to do that it must mean something’s gonna be said that’s going to be interesting,” said Michael Koretzky, the director of SPJ Region 3 and host of the event when speaking to Polygon on the threats sent into the event. “No one calls in a bomb threat or sends harassing emails to a boring debate.”

#GamerGate supporters previously organized a meetup in Washington D.C., only to meet a similar response with repeated bomb threats. This event was the first officially-sanctioned event by the movement, and it probably won’t be the last on the receiving end of bomb threats, if the SPJ event is any indication.

This gamergate stuff got out of hand long ago. I don’t even know what it’s about.

Out of all the whackadoodle theories I’ve heard, this one is the keeper: GamerGate sent the bomb threats themselves.

Enough with the trolls, though: SJP is a perfect time to get legitimized as a consumer revolt, and here’s hoping not just Breitbart will cover this, but even some popular news sites as well. (I’ve seen a HotAir coverage, and Polygon didn’t do a bad job themselves.)

first: journalism ethics, specifically in games journalism.
later: also the hatred and misrepresentation of gamers and developers, SJW in the games journalism claming that gamers and developers are misogynists and racists and the mainstream media copy pasting the articles into their papers

I appreciate taking a couple days to report on this to make sure you got your facts straight.

Surprisingly, I’ve seen a number of fair and decent articles about this. Even Polygon put out an article about it and it was mostly accurate as to what the event was and what gamergate is trying to do.

I know gamergate has been dragged through the mud, with idiots harassing people and just other bad eggs that give it a bad name, but I’m glad there are people that stick to their guns and really want to talk about journalistic ethics.

But yeah, glad everyone was safe. and glad folks are willing to have open discussion about these subjects. Also, don’t go pointing your fingers at SJWs. We don’t know who did this. It very well could be an unaffiliated third party looking to stir shit up. Baseless accusations is what they do.

It wouldn’t be the first time someone false flags to make a victim of themselves so it’s not such a crazy idea BUT usually the ones that do that sort of thing are the ones that benefit of playing the victim the most.

GamerGate doesn’t really benefit of playing victim, and having a successful event would have been much better, so it wouldn’t even make sense for them to do this.

Plus it’s a known fact that GamerGate detractors do love to abuse the system to make it do their dirty work.

So the bomb threat self false flag theory has no grounds, no motivation, and thus low probability of being true.

    Essentially this ^

It started out just about game journalism, but lack of fact checking, uncritically pushing and parroting narratives and conflating facts and opinions to obfuscate an issue, which can cause serious harm to people via their reputations or encourage others to send them bomb threats, are all unethical practices the mainstream media is guilty of as well.

The media has gotten so far away from reporting the news they’re in the territory of creating it.

I’d say GamerGate is still about ethics in journalism, It’s just not about ONLY games journalism anymore.

You know how “games journalism” is a corrupted piece of filth ?

Well, some people are tired of it, and want to boycott it.

But the journalists don’t like that.

That’s basically the back and forth that has been going on for all this time, events happen, the story moves on, but that’s essentially what’s really behind it all.

Somehow I saw something like this coming a mile away. Sad thing about the whole GG controversy is that this could of easily ended before it even began. I guess there are some people out there ( weather it be from GG, antis or trolls) who have to resort to pointless and baseless threats to keep the gravy train going for their own personal gain. Its not like theres more immediate things going on in the world i guess.

Voat too. Gamergate never really died. NBC just stopped being the only news organization to be talking about it constantly. Especially when the show that brought GG to Mainstream News (The Reid Report) got axed due to lackluster views less than 4 months after that episode.

Most already do avoid anti-gg sites, it’s more about people spreading false information and those ignorant to the situation will believe.

For example the many mainstream news that takes the sides and showcase the bias views of radfems and even that laughable episode of Law&orders that took anti-gg that did no research.

A fine choice, until you can no longer enjoy your favorite kinds of games because they have been declared “problematic”, their creators harassed, threatened and butchered in the media until they stopped making them.

Seems overly dramatic, I know, but it is already happening.

GamerGate is about intellectual honesty. It has been from the start, in one form or another. Pro-ethics and anti-SJW both stem from that common core — we hate lies and deliberate omissions and want people to just be fucking honest already.

Most people who already know better avoid anti-GG sites. The problem is most people don’t already know better than to get their news from ridiculously biased sources that have openly declared their refusal to even attempt objective reporting.

Can’t say I’m surprised, as these muppets have shown inclinations towards threats and violence to silence those who dare to oppose their insane narrative many times before, not realizing that these acts only turn more people against them.

Look at all the things the journos would lose if they had to behave like professionals.

They’d have to put effort into whatever they write about, like getting sources or verifying facts.

They wouldn’t get easily laid for a good review or extra promotion.

They’d lose the nice fat corporate bribes they get.

They would have to write interesting and thoughtful articles to get people’s interest instead of MUSOGYKNEEE tabloid crap.

And on that same note, they’d actually have to learn how to write articles that attempt to make sense instead of baby my blog tier ramblings.

Unsurprisingly, they don’t like that idea.

No irony there, I say that in one of the few, very few specific sites that actually are good, and by extension easily miles better than 99% of the games journalism sites out there which have dropped the bar for the industry to a negative oblivion and they are what generally constitutes “games journalism”.

    It isn’t that simple.

These people are getting people fired over nothing or lies and otherwise ruining lives on their sites. They run the game competitions which dictate how much funding a dev could get. They are making or breaking game developers for no other reason than they don’t like their politics (not enough minorities or women are too sexy in their games).

And lets not forget, these people are trying to make laws as well and their millions of readers are eating it up.

People certainly have the right to say that. Just as I have the right to say that Anita probably sent the threat to Utah State University herself, that the twitter account Deathtobriannawu was a false flag, and that Zoe faked getting doxxed.

YOU NOW REALIZE THAT SJWs WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR FURTHERING THE ALREADY DRACONIAN LEGISLATURE AGAINST THE UNITED STATES CITIZENS “FOR YOUR PROTECTION” BECAUSE THEY CAN’T STOP USING FAUX-TERRORISM TACTICS.

    tl;dr This isn’t 1984. It’s The Fireman/Fahrenheit 451, and you can thank SJWs.
At least we can know for certain that when the system crashes into a complete dystopia the SJW ideological drones, who helped inseminate it’s malformed birth with their tactics born of ignorance, will literally be the first to go.
No, I mean LITERALLY they will be the first to be slaughtered. It’s just the nature of Cultural Subversion.
