SNK Playmore is Acquired by Chinese Company, Plans for New Games, Cross-Media, More

real bout fatal fury 08-06-15-1

We’ve learned that iconic fighting game developer SNK Playmore has been purchased by an external company.

Chinese company Leyou Technologies has reportedly purchased 81.25% of SNK Playmore’s stock, for $63.5 million. This grants Leyou majority stake over SNK Playmore.

The key reasoning behind this purchase comes from Oriental Securities CEO Zheng Jianhui (who are part of the joint venture with Leyou), who said they bought SNK for their characters and various intellectual properties.

Here’s where things get a bit more interesting – Leyou Technologies are planning to expand their business strategy with this purchase to be more like Marvel, meaning new projects with SNK Playmore’s IPs outside of games. However, this includes more games, tv shows, movies, and so on.

The final nail in the coffin has finally been hammered into SNK. Sad to see it go. It’s too bad someone reputable didn’t just make an asset deal for their licenses.

SNK’s coffin has been nailed shut for years. This is some Chinese guy uprooting coffins hoping to find a Jiangshi.

You say that like SNK didn’t already focus on F2P crap since 2010.

Suddenly Art of Fighting being a knockoff of Street Fighter got a lot more true.

You’d think with KOF13 that SNK would build themselves back up but once again we have another company that missed the opportunity big time. But then again they did released that piss port Metal Slug F2P game on Steam.

Here’s hoping they have better standards than making cheap pieces of shit outside of movies like how Marvel has been with everything but the big screen!

As a major fan of poorly dubbed kung fu flicks, this is awesome and I fully support it. They should just do this now.

I was actually expecting Capcom to acquire SNK, so as to introduce the King of Fighters cast as “new” Street Fighter V characters.

Can’t wait for the new KoF with stolen Dota and League characters and the f2p MOBA Metal Slug with stolen League and Dota characters.

“We” might not even get it. everything could be China-only if not Asia-only. With a return to region locking to boot.

That’s the dumbest thing I ever heard. But I would pay to see that happen. I’m a sucker for copyright infringements.

The Chinese do certainly love their copyright infringement, and I’ve seen way too many examples of Dota 2/League characters being rip-offed by them.

Man, l can’t help but take pity the way SNK is today, they where completely ahead of time back in the day and even after their bankruptcy/reformation, they still managed to get some gems out.

What this news says to me is that there is going to be more MOBA/MMO clones and mobile apps plastered with SNK’s characters.
