Cyberpunk 2077 Developers Explain Why It Was Revealed So Early

After hearing that CD Projekt doesn’t plan to reveal anything new about Cyberpunk 2077 for another two years, we assumed that we’d seen the last of the game popping up in developer interviews. Not so, apparently, since an article on IGN that recounts a discussion with one of the CD Projekt Red members makes mention of the game and why they started talking about it so early in its development cycle.

According to the interview, CD Projekt Red wanted to test the waters, so to speak, and intended to gauge the interest in the game by listening to feedback from fans.

We released the Cyberpunk teaser trailer because we wanted to see how gamers felt about it. We were super excited about the project internally, but what if it wasn’t the right thing [for us]? But the response has been incredible. Now it’s just up to us to deliver. We’re hard at work on it
You can craft swords for 12 years, but you might get burnt out. People might want to leave and go work on something else. We’re excited to switch to guns. We intended to keep [the team] energized with Cyberpunk. The core team is working The Witcher 3’s expansions, but more and more people are moving over onto Cyberpunk.

They also mention Bethesda’s highly successful Fallout 4 reveal at E3 and compare their release strategy to the one they’ve employed with Cyberpunk 2077:

“We’re impressed with Fallout 4’s rollout. They came on stage and said ‘It’s here, it’s real, and it’s coming out on this date. We’re going to do something similar. We’re going to wait [to reveal the game] until we can show off a very meaningful piece of it.”

There’s still no word yet on a release date (naturally) and info will be sparse, if anything at all, but at least we know now that Witcher 3 coders are slowly being reassigned to work on the new game. We’ll keep you posted if anything new leaks out.
