Fan Outrage Against Paid Steam Mods Cost Valve $1 Million in 2 Days

Following the announcement that Valve would be allowing content creators to charge money for mods on Steam, Valve has been getting backlash from their fans. The extent of this backlash is somewhat overwhelming, if Valve boss Gabe Newell’s recent AMA is anything to go by.

When a fan probed the Valve boss in saying they were simply looking for more profits, Newell responded:

“Let’s assume for a second that we are stupidly greedy. So far the paid mods have generated $10K total. That’s like 1% of the cost of the incremental email the program has generated for Valve employees (yes, I mean pissing off the Internet costs you a million bucks in just a couple of days). That’s not stupidly greedy, that’s stupidly stupid.

You need a more robust Valve-is-evil hypothesis.”

It’s worth mentioning that Newell started his AMA with a statement revealing he personally got 3,500 messages within two days (since the announcement of paid mods) and that Valve had apparently “pissed off the internet.”

“If we are censoring people, that’s stupid [and] I’ll get that to stop,” said Newell when saying he would personally resolve the issue of censorship on various Steam community forums regarding paid mods. “On top of it being stupid, it doesn’t work.”

So how do you guys feel about paid mods on Steam?
