Square Enix has announced (via Hachima Kikou) a mobile spinoff for their online MMORPG, Final Fantasy XI, at a press release today in Japan.

The new free to play game, dubbed simply Final Fantasy Grandmasters, is heading to Japanese smartphone users. The game looks like a smartphone-adapted RPG, where you control various classes and equip them with various gear.

The game is reportedly going to allow for the world of Vana’Diel to survive on, via this game. Just how this is being made possible, hasn’t really been made clear yet.

A beta test for the game is set to arrive some time next month.
