In unlikely news, Interplay and Drip Drop Games are busy rebooting the classic joke claymation fighting series, ClayFighter.

Marketed as a family-friendly alternative to Mortal Kombat, the original ClayFighter was created by Visual Concepts and published by Interplay Entertainment on the SNES, and then ported to the Sega Mega Drive (known as the Genesis in North America).

It will be interesting to see how the developers tackle the incredibly outdated graphics. According to the press release announcing the project, gameplay will also be updated:

The game will be packed with the best of all previous ClayFighter titles, including:

  • Characters such as Bad Mr. Frosty, Blue Suede Goo, Earthworm Jim, Hoppy, Boogerman, Tiny – and more with over 20 characters total!
  • Over 20 familiar environments from the series to duke it out in!
  • Brand new gameplay introducing new mechanics to the series such as double jumping, air dashing, counters, and reversals!
  • Unique supers and “Claytality” moves for each character!

The game will feature remastered audio and high resolution visuals providing the ultimate clay based gaming experience!

Although Interplay are calling this project a “remaster”, considering the changes, it’s really a reboot.

The “remastered” ClayFighter will launch on PCs some time in 2016.
